Stand-up riding

My question is just out of curiosity. I am 40 years old and have been on a sled my entire life. We were in the U.P. this weekend and I have noticed that more and more people are riding standing up. Now I realize the benefits of this on rough trails or boondockin, but why run down a perfectly smooth trail standing. I would think this has to be colder. I am not judging how anyone rides, I am just curious. Thanks

I do about 50/50. Sometimes it's just for a change, sometimes it's for comfort. Sometimes it's because I'm hot and trying to cool down. When it's dusty, you can actually see better with a sled in front of you. Get above the dust cloud a little.

ya whats with the back packs??

For backcountry riding and sometimes trail riding, i carry a shovel, sno bungee, gps, platbooks/maps, water, a couple samitches, extra oil, gloves, maybe a pair of socks, in my backpack. You will almost always see me with one even if just trail riding, as me and my wife leave the truck in ironwood and ride from there for the weekend. We just drive till we hit the snow then ride from there. Why put the miles on the truck when you can put them on the sled!

My new sleds have almost no storage so they are really nice to have. I used to make fun of the guys who wore back packs till i was out riding with a buddy and we stopped in the middile of nowhere and he whips out a whole buffet of food and drink and nice dry socks while Im sitting there nawing on a frozen snickers with a wet left foot. It looks silly but man is it nice to have all that crap with out riding especially if you have one of the back packs designed for snowmobiling and you cant even tell you have them on. As far as standing up, i usally only do that when its rough, off trail or trying to cool off, otherwise i agree you look like and idiot going down a flat trail standing!

Seems like the guys standing up riding are always looking around and behind them to see if people are watching them ride, almost like they think they are either racers or some off trail expert, but in reality IMO it looks lame. But do what you want, just move over and quit holding people up on the trails.

I don't get why people care about the way others ride if it isn't causing any harm? I stand up on bumpy trails but sit when they are groomed most of the time. Sometimes it is more comfortable to alter riding postions not to cramp up on a cold day.

I think I have the largest collection of garden tools in my backpack.

I stand up a lot, I'm 42. The seat on my RMK is not the most comfortable thing. When the trails get whooped up, standing is easier on the old body. The last time I was up there in da yoop, I was riding behind some guys on some early 2000 ZR's, they were sitting down, getting bucked all over the place. My thoughts were "dudes, you guys really need to stand up."A few years back we were riding from John's house back to Twin Lakes, I stood the entire way back. No big deal to me, and I don't think I was holding anybody up either. :)

I personally stand while riding not all the time, but I especially dont do it to look cool.... This is like a two year olds comment. It's nice to stand to stretch the legs out and IMO I can see better. And assuming that anybody that stands while riding, rides slow and just hold people up on the trail...come on really?

Speaking of garden tools, I broke my hand saw back in Dec. Thinking about putting my Craftsman battery charged sawzall in my tunnel bag. It will fit too. :)

I am actually into laying down these days. I keep a nice soft pillow in my backpack and break it out when I feel a nap coming on. Really makes the ride that much more enjoyable.

But seriously. Don't do too much standing while on the trail unless it is bumpy and I need to save the rear from abuse. Otherwise sitting while on the trail works for me!

I stand up and ride because my backpack is so heavy with all my gardening tools it hurts my back to sit.

snobunji makes a great saw but I have learned over the years the saws are one way saws---so be careful or it breaks easy on return pull......

Oh ya and I use hand signals every time i pass someone.....

It's colder, raises your COG and makes no sense at all for smooth trail riding...

It's a "trendy thing" mostly. Standing up to "dry off" or stretch means a few minutes, not all day. With the lack of windshields on these newer sleds, you might as well stand up because you don't get shielded from the wind much and standing sitting is all the same. Those backpacks make me laugh. Ever see some people go on vacation....they throw everything they own in the trailer, trunk, boat and spend most the day unloading and packing again when they go home. My brother is like that...but he says that it makes him feel like he can enjoy himself better, and I say....yeah, while I am still playing your packing back up again and taking half the day to do it. Once while sledding I stopped to look at a map and take a breather....One guy pulls up stops, begins to unload his backpack....out comes a table cloth...no kidding. He spreads it on the hardpack and begins to pull out a pile of stuff to eat. All I can say is they better not go thru the ice anywhere because they will sink like a stone if they do with all that stuff on their backs.

I just shake my head and try to gather my strength and move on a little quicker.

All he did was ask a question about why people ride standing up. I don't think it was a shot at stand up riders.

Now, as for my comment about the garden tools. I suppose you could take it as a shot if you want to, but it was just a joke.

As for me. I am a fat, lazy sit down rider who wants nothing to do with tools, and the only time I want to stand up is to get another piece of meat out of the Muffpot under the hood. :)
