Thinking of putting a starter in a 2002 550 f/c polaris has anyone put one in? Where do get the kit? Do you have to change the clutch?
Or sell it and get one with e start.

First off why put the bucks into a sled that old. E start will require some labor on that model. Good rule of thumb if it is for a kid. "If you can't pull the rope, you can't ride it". Meaning A 120 is easyier to start then a 340 and so on. Age fits the strength of the sled size to start it. Now if your handicapped that would be different. Kit comes from the dealer. Sometimes on Ebay you can find one. Not even sure if avail. for that motor. Call dealer they will tell you.

Electric Start

Some primary clutches you can bolt on the ring gear that the starter's pinion will engage. Other kits come with a new primary clutch with the ring gear already installed. In either case you will need the propery clutch puller, which is basically a long bolt that forces the clutch off the engine's output shaft, to remove the clutch. A trick for this process is to pump some grease into the clutch bolt hole before inserting the clutch puller. This uses hydraulic pressure instead of mechanical pressure which grinds the end of the puller into the end of the output shaft.

Make sure you get the right kit for the chassis you have. The Edge and Gen II chassis use some different parts. Somehow I won a bid on eBay which was the kit for the Gen II chassis and not the Edge. I had to order the right battery holder; it is significantly different. Also, the bendix gear housing was removed for the Edge models, which made bolting on the one for the Gen II almost impossible because of clearances between the engine and the belly pan. I changed around the set-up and used a stud and nut instead of a bolt to connect the housing to the engine block.

I installed that on an Edge 500 XC. It is pretty easy if you follow the instructions, have the right kit and the right tools. A torque wrench is a must for installing the clutch bolt. Use blue Loctite wherever the instructions tell you to, which is pretty much everywhere.

Electric Start is a great thing to have. Good Luck. You can do it.

kit usually comes with a bare primary clutch(has a gear on back side) depending on your clutch you might be able to just buy the ring gear. starter motor wiring, battery box, starter mounts, solenoid. Im not sure if they make a kit for that year/model though.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll try to sell it.

It is for my 12 yr old daughter, but there isn't alot of small sleds out there anymore. I would love to get her a 340. I am in northern IL if anyone has a 340.

Tex,

Thought I would mention that Yamaha is selling a new 340cc this year. It's kind of a retro machine from the 80's. Not sure of the model name but saw one at a dealer recently and did a double take. I'm not a Yamaha guy so I don't know a lot about that brand. I couldn't find any info on their website either. It's based on a utility frame, has a one piston engine, steel skis, and tall windshield. It be perfect for a youngster or a Dad that enjoys Ice Fishing. Of course we're talking a lot more than what a starter would cost. Just sayin, Christmas is just around the corner...

Polaris 340

Hey Tex, As late as 2007 Polaris still made a 340 LX model. Last year at a poo dealer they had a brand new leftover. There are usually people upgrading kids to bigger machines and selling the 340's.
