starter problem

Ok this is not a snowmobile question but an ATV question instead. My 05 polaris sportsman is having issues with the starter. I turn the key and you can here the starter whinning but not turning over the engine. I also tried pulling it over by hand using the recoil and noticed that the recoil will not engage also. Any ideas on what is the problem?

two different problems...

recoil is gunked-up, or corroded- spray with penetrating oil- the little "tabs" that come out to engage the flywheel.

the starter...could be battery is not charged enough to spin it fast enough to allow the bendix to engage.

bendix is stuck and won't engage flywheel

battery is hooked-up backwards, causing starter to spin backwards=bendix won't engage

starter is shot!

well it turns out that there was moisture in there and it froze preventing the starter pinion to engage the flywheel. Something so simple to fix is definetly nice for a change.
