Does anyone know how to disassemble a starter soleniod? I have one that is hanging up and I know it has to come apart somehow. Any helpwould be appreciated.
Thanks

On my Polaris there were 2 long bolts that run the length of the starter. Take them out and pull it apart. You may have to tap LIGHTLY on the ends to get them started. Once it starts to come apart watch for the brushes and springs, have a clean work area and pay attention as you take the armature (copper wire covered long drive shaft thingey)out of the motor housing. On my starter the output shaft bearing was rusted solid to the shaft and would not budge. I had burned up the armature already and had to put on a new starter ($90.00 aftermarket at local automotive starter repair company) so I used a hammer and punch to beat it apart. Most of these small starters are throw aways so if you can get it apart clean it up so it will work, thats great however finding parts could be difficult.
Good luck

I'm refering to the soleniod on the side of the starter(motor). Sometimes refered to as the bendix.
I had a starter on a truck once that the copper bolt on the "soleniod" was burnt off inside the soleniod from the arcing when making contact. I took it to a guy that rebuilt them and he took it apart and replaced the bolt in 20 mins, at a cost of $20.00. This guy has passed away a few years ago. I would like to disasseble the Soleniod to replace this bolt.
Any experts out there in John Dee land.

Thanks
