Summer Storage

Now that I have 2 XP's with electric start, I am thinking of running for 15min every 4 weeks vs taking out batteries and fogging. Anyone have experience with this approach?

Thanks,

Keep the plugs in and make sure you have fresh gas. Put new plugs in before your first ride. Others may have different opinions but, if you run it regularly, you should be good.

Even if you go that approch (I wouldn't IMO) you can and should use a battery charging device, like a bettery tender. I use one on anything that sits more than a week, and the life of my batteries have been greatly extended.

X 2. I read an artical in science digest once that did a study on batteries and charging systems and (at least with automotive systems) it needs to run for at least 1/2 hour to put the charge back into a battery. I have a batterie tender that I bought from auto zone, and I bought extra pig tails to wire into the batterie's. All I do is rotate from sleds, to mower, to trailer. I leave it on each batterie for a day or two. Nice thing about it is at least it makes me look at the sleds once a week or so to see if any critters have got in my trailer.

I have a 2008 xp that I have not charged the battery yet. I have not cleaned the carbs just use seafoam most of the year. I thought i had a battery problem but the ground did come loose. I just start it every month and let it run. That seems to be the most important. My dad has a yamaha 4stroke does the same thing just charges the battery before winter.

Just make sure they are completely warmed up if you start them over summer storage.

This is the most important part. The theory is that you are warming the motor up to the point of drying it of any moisture within the entire engine. Crank and rod bearings as much as rings. If you have ever watched water come to a boil in a clear container/lid, you will notice that the container gets most humid just before the heavy boiling. That is what you are trying to get out of your engine so a good 10 minute run is needed. I like to summerize this way if I can get at my sleds. If not I run the motor with the oil injection wired wide open. To me it is more important to dry the motor out and lube the crank and rod bearings than fog the cylinder walls with 2.99 fogging oil.
