Superior Snow Challenge Loops

here is the site www.snowchallenge.ca I have done them all. Even most I have done Clockwise and counter clockwise. It is getting far more difficult to make the loops happen today than 10 yrs. ago. Not only do you have snow conditions to worry about but a bigger threat is the amount of motels and gas stations on the loops that have closed. Don't trust the maps for pit stops locations. Actually call all stops before leaving to make sure of their Hours and If they are still in Business. Bambinos truck stop is always dicey and the big Hotel complex in Hornpayne is rumoured to have closed up. Manitowadge motel opens and closes just as fast. Pre planning is a must. Canada is far more remote than the UP. You may not see another sled all day. Gotta love it. Hope that answers some of the questions sent to me. also check out www.nossa.ca www.gorideinontario.ca www.tata-bestsnowmobiling.com www.algomatrails.com

Have you ever rode around Superior? We had hoped to give that a shot, but it sounds dicey in areas. Last year there was an option of going around with a guide, but they did not have enough people sign up and the trip was cancelled. I have not seen anything in the works for this year.

Man, riding up there looks like fun. I check nlmotel.com often during the season. I haven't been in that area before, but it has been mentioned several times on there about how much of the businesses up there have shut down.

I would love to go back to Canada soon, but with the current exchange rates and likely gas prices this winter, it's going to be hard to justify, although we had some incredible rides the last time we up there. It really is incredible to ride 300+ miles in a day while only seeing a handle of sleds.

I'd love to ride in Can. also, but I think it's like 220$ for a trail pass. Sure wish it was more reasonable. Someday maybe.

I saw this trip advertised by a snowmoble tour company for the new season. I think they said allow 2 weeks.

Good old gurgle gas with rust in it. gotta love the $7 a gallon. But you have to buy gas there or you will not make Wawa. Halfway has come a long ways in the last 10 yrs. Ten yrs. ago I think that most of the "Most wanted" show fugitives stayed there. Nobody but a crazy sledder would travel into the bush 90 miles to the first and only gas for another 90 miles. It's not a bad place to stay now. Hot tub, good food, unisex bathrooms, etc. my kinda place.

We were a bit surprised to say they least. Our first pit stop on a 1400 mile 5 day loop and we're spending close to $100.00 to fill the sleds. We stopped in for seconds on the way back to the Sault, thank god they took credit cards because most of us left our cash in Hearst.

Back in the day it was cash for gas period. The gas was trucked in by jeep in metal 55 gallon drums (hence the rust) in the fall. then they went to dragging in a 2000 gallon tank on wood skids with a dozer for 32 miles thru the woods from the closest logging road to the Northeast. Now they have a real nice setup were the gas truck can pretty much make it down their 2 track the distance. on ocassion it needs the bulldozers help. They told me that the gas truck has to travel about 150 miles from the Soo to get there. yet it is about 90 miles by sled trail. My kinda riding.

Several of us rode the trail from the Soo many years ago--before Halfway-Haven-we took extra gas-one of the guys built all of us carriers for 5 gallons for each machine-the trail was not marked in places, but we made it!

I believe it is now up to $250.

If you buy before December 1st, it's $200. Goes up to $250 after that. They want you to buy early (before the snow falls). They have a snow guarantee this year, but the terms and conditions of the deal pretty much guarantee you won't be getting your money back (less than 31cm of snow all season in Barrie, Ontario) and you have to pay another $10 just to qualify - kinda like insurance. Ontario also offers shorter term permits (1 week, 3 day, etc.) for less and a Classic permit for sleds 15 years old or more for $125.

If you want to head over to Quebec for even nicer trails, you need to hand over another 3 bills (after December)! You folks to the south - and west - have it cheap!
