I was wondering if someone could help me...I would really like to ride the area posted in this topic, but I am having a hard time finding lodging on the trail. I did find the River View Lodge in Darlington, but it is booked for th etime I would be able to go. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

There is a Quality Inn right on the trail just north of Mineral Point. Its right next to the gas station on highway 23. Stayed there last weekend. Worked well for us.

Dan - Were you able to ride south from that Quality Inn? The map shows a trail, but Ride Command does not. What areas did you ride? I am looking to cover Iowa, Lafayette, and Grant counties at a minimum with desire to hit a little of Green County as well. Did you find any decent crossing of the WI River to get to say, Crawford or Sauk County?

We rode from Deerfield area south to Monroe, west to Gratiot/Brownstown area, north through Darlington and up to Point. I was using the ride command app also and noticed what your saying. No worries though. The trail goes right through town. There is some asphalt riding through town that isn't ideal but not a big deal. The next day we rode over to Belmont, down to Platteville, hit Cuba city and Shullsburg, and back around down by Darlington. The following day back over to Juda and then home. We never did head north at all because it seemed the farther south we were, the more snow there was. Never really hit a bad trail all weekend and had a darn good time. 600 miles in 3 days. Fyi, I'm not sure Lafayette county puts out a snowmobile trail map. Never saw one our whole time down there. Atv maps but no sled maps. I just used ride command though and didn't have much of a problem.

Thanks again Dan. I have found a Lafayette county snow map, but it just shows trails...no stops or gas. Better than nothing.

We stayed at the Super 8 in Platteville last Friday. The trail went right to it. Food and drinks within walking distance

Any confirmation on where we can cross the river going north? Grant County shows potential crossings in Boscobel, Blue River, and Muscoda. Are these on the bridges/pavement or on the ice (if there is any)? Its hard looking at the maps because some of them online are not that great.

Can you cross from Sauk to Iowa County in Spring Green? The Sauk county map kind of shows this, but the Iowa county map doesn't really show this. I requested maps from all of these areas but a lot do not mail maps out and some do not even print maps.

One other potential crossing in Prairie du Sac in the southeast corner of Sauk County?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Crossing Wis river on the ice is a really bad idea anytime!

The Spring Green crossing is a no-go this year. The bridge is out. The Prairie du Sac crossing works but is a four block scrape to the trail. The other place to cross is lake Wisconsin to Merrimac.

Thanks for the info, we are planning a Friday ride and we were considering crossing at Spring Green! So is the merrimac crossing easy to navigate? Plenty of tracks?

I just heard back from the Honey Creek Snowmobile Club. The Hwy 60 bridge has snow on the side for sleds. The 4 blocks of road to get to it from the east side is also ice/snow covered. It might not be too bad with these cold temps and inability for salt to work. Grin and bear it maybe. The bad part about the Hwy 23 bridge is you need to go all the way across to Muscoda to cross back south if doing any type of loop ride.

As for crossing the ice on the WI River. That is how you cross in Byron in central WI. Not being familiar with the area I was simply asking if it used the hwy bridges or do these areas freeze hard enough to allow crossing on the ice.

It's a good year to cross the 60 bridge due to snow and ice(not going anywhere with the temps).

I've crossed Lake Wisconsin at Merrimac multiple times over the years. I would assume it would be good with recent low temps, but we had a fairly warm start. I would call one of the local clubs, or bars on the lake.

There will be a new bridge that eliminates taking 60 bridge for sledders. Good collaboration between different outdoor groups! Looking forward to this!

I crossed from Merrimac to the Lodi side on Sunday. The lake has a well beaten path across it.

The hwy 60 crossing was good to go. Even main street through town was fine. Even had a cop come towards me while riding main street in Prairie du Sac. He waved. The cross back in Boscobel was all pavement...at least it was wet. Took it slow and carbides are no worse for wear. There are some really challenging/difficult trails on the west side of Richland County and from Rolling Ground to the south in Crawford county; think goat trails. I am not sure how these can be marked trails. The word dangerous comes to mind. I am somewhat glad that the less experienced riders backed out of this trip.

The only other issues we had was the trail from Montfort to Rewey...It was closed and not posted. Then there was a directional sign just west of Belmont that does no indicate which way to go to make your way to Calamine. The Lafayette County map does not show any enlarged views of any of the towns.

But, overall very fun area and for the most part the groomers were staying ahead of the drifted fields. We based out of Mineral Point and touched 9 counties with 515 miles ridden in just under 3 days.
