swapping out a 1997 Polaris Trail xtra 10 with an xtra 12?

I'm hoping to swap out my son's suspension on his 97 Trail with the xtra 12. Can this be done easily? I am only handy enough to get myself in to trouble, but usually can figure it out. Anyone have any other thoughts on other options short of getting a newer sled?! His suspension(original) is starting to go and I figured if I was going to wrench on it why not upgrade it a little too!
Any advice is welcome.
thanks!

I put the edge suspension in on my 99 Polaris xc 600, it took the place of the 10. Did this many years ago and don't remember the specs to redrill the holes. It did help the ride but I'm still not convinced it was worth all the time and money. good luck

I wouldn't install a xtra 12 suspension. I'd spend the money and time installing some quality gas rebuildable shocks. Fox shocks or Ryde Fx would be a good shock to install. Have the shock set up for the rider weight and let the shock builder know what kind of riding you mostly do. I do that with every sled suspension I have ever owned. Makes a world of difference in good shocks and tuning.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look around and see what it will take to do. New shocks sure does beat his solution....new sled!

X2 on keeping the Xtra 10 and improving the shocks. If you can find the rear shock with an adjustable valve (it will be a screw at the base of the shock) this allows further tuning for weight or riding conditions. Also look at the rear springs, if he is around 150 lb or even less look at lightweight springs for it on ebay or salvage yards. If the springs are too stiff he won't be using the full range of motion of the suspension. I put lighter springs in my son's 97 Indy 500 when he was younger and it made a big difference. The Xtra 10 is still a good performer when set up right.
