Thaw over for portions of the Northwoods

Well, it is looking like the thaw is over for most areas in WI to the NW of a line from around LaCrosse to Rhinelander to Eagle River and then the UP from Watersmeet to Baraga. Temps have fallen into the 20's and look to stay there for the rest of the day. Some frozen precip, freezing drizzle, freezing rain or sleet is still possible later today as the precip in IA moves northeast, but it looks like we are done with the liquid precip.

Currently 25 degrees and a freezing drizzle/flurry mix here in beautiful Allowez Township.

PS. Really liking our chances for LES later tomorrow through most of next week.

Thanks John!

Was feeling pretty gloomy about all of the rain and melting last night. It'll be nice to start the new year with the hope of some new snow!

My inlaws come each year during the holidays to visit and to ride. They reminded me yesterday that 4-5 years ago, I called them the day before they came and told them to leave the sleds at home...we had lost essentially all our snow.

They decided to bring them anyway and we got more than 30" the first couple days they were here and the riding was perfect. Good to remeber, this is my 6th winter here and it will be the 4th one there was a major meltdown around the new year.

Just got back from a trip to town and snapped two shots of the trails. I think these two will pretty much illustrate both the good and bad.

Here is the bad, it is just south of Mohawk, where the reroute occurred. They did not finish the re-route until Dec 3, so all that great base making snow we got around Thanksgiving and the first two days of Dec were torn up here by the heavy machinery used to do the re-route. This re-route section is about 1 1/2 miles long and is just south of Mohawk.

Here is the good. It is the trail crossing just north of Calumet, right next to the old Northgate Motel. This is what things are like in probably 85% of our system. Conditions in towns or right next to the lake will look way more like pic 1.

Will post more pics once the repair gets underway. Right now, 25 degrees and a bit of light snow. Thaw over.

A quick update.

The LES has started, not too heavy yet, but looks like some pretty decent totals starting up later today through tomorrow (6-12"), with more where that came from pretty much the rest of the week.

I'am glad some LES is looking good

Thanks for the update John. And that "bad" conditions shot of the Mohawk trail would qualify for "awesome" trail conditions back in Illinois.

I am coming up the 9th through the 13th. John if you don't mind me asking, is the LES mainly contained to the northern kw peninsula?? I am staying on Gogebic and am kinda nervous about the conditions there in a week from now..... Thanks in advance.

Right now it is looking like there will be a strong westerly component to the winds, which favors areas from around Painesdale north. However, at times it will be from the WNW or even NW, which will allow places like Gogebic, Mass, Twin Lakes to get snow too.

A week is a long time up here when we get into a snow cycle like looks to be happening, so don't lose too much faith just yet.

Right now the winds are SW and there is some wicked looking LES bands out over the lake, only a few miles NW of me. The winds will becoming more westerly by later this afternoon or evening and then she should cut lose over me. Looking forward to it. Picked up around a inch this morning.

Nah he was done peeing , it was a rental Sled and he was looking it over, he was actually impressed with that vector, he's a diehard Arctic Cat guy but M&M only had this sled left to rent after he tit a huge rock in the trail that took out his front right side suspension.
