The Doohickey Fell Out Of My Thingamajig!

Hey Everyone,

Yesterday I noticed something shiny on the front door mat after returning from a ride and unloading all my gear. Upon further investigation, I realized it was the metallic contact thingy from inside my Ski-Doo DESS key. Does anyone know if this can be fixed or if I'm in for a new key? If you push on it, it "clicks" as it indents, so I'm affraid if I just glue it in it won't function properly. Perhaps there's a special conductive silicone that can be used? Let me know if you've had this happen before.

Thanks!

You can get a new one. I did on my 01 mxz. I had to take sled and registration card to dealer to show proof of ownership. I think it was like 40 bucks but that was a few years ago.

On a serious note> you can save the $40 bucks if you are willing to solder that back on. I have soldered wires on the back of bakelite contact boards . What you will need is a good soldering gun or pencil, peel the boot back , and devise a " heat sink " to pull ( protect ) the unwanted heat away from the other areas. It can be as simple as a wet rag / w ice cubes or froze in the freezer with a cut out area .

Just a suggestion. You may have to be clever but I would give it a shot.

My DESS key did the same thing on my old 2000 MXZ, i just super glued it back on. It worked like that for 3 years with no issues. I just but a drop of glue on each tab and it worked fine. Just make sure that there is no glue in the contact area.

Hah - Nice catch! Long story short I spent 3 hours trouble shooting why my sled would start but not move anywhere without dying. Then I realized I grabbed the key for my wife's sled thinking it was mine. I was so ticked off I made sure it would never happen again :) Hers says "GSX".

These things must be cheap in the U.S. - here in Canada I think they go for well over $100 for a new one by the time you get it programmed.

I thought about soldering it but was worried about melting the boot or frying the internal circuit. I guess it's worth a try if I can get the boot off. Might see if super glue works first though as it seems like the safer bet.

Thanks all. Don't hesitate to chime in if you have other suggestions.

Here is a good one for ya i have one missing on one of my sleds and it still works, and the system still works because if i try the teather from my other sled same year it will start as it should but wont rev up .The only thing i have noticed is when i start the sled alot of times i have to wiggle the tether to make it read but that is kinda nornal anyway the sled has over 10,000 miles on it and has been that way for 3 yrs.So is that little piece really necessary ?

snowfreak - I've done some searching over on DooTalk and it seems to be hit and miss. Some say they have no problem without it, others say they can't get the sled to function properly without it. I think I'm going to test the sled without it and if all goes well, forget about finding a fix much like yourself. If I have troubles, I'll super glue it back in. As a last resort, I'll head to the dealer for a new one.

Thanks for the reply!
