The dreaded "dry slot"

John, what's the dreaded dry slot caused by? I've noticed several storms look like they're right on target, and slowly, a dry slot opens up, and parts the storm like Moses.

Low pressures draw air into them from all directions. That means cold air is drawn in from the north, warm from the south. Moisture is also drawn in from the south (Gulf region) in low pressure systems that track through the central US.

Those same lows that track through the central US can have dry air drawn into them from the west or southwest. That dry air intrusion into the low is called the dry slot.
