Thinking about a gps.

Now that I've got the new sled, I'm thinking about adding a gps. I would like one that mounts to the handlebar and plugs in for power. The Rush LX has a 12v plug on the dash so it will be easy to hook up. What do you guys use/recommend. I have a nuvi 350 that I use for work travels, but I would want a weatherproof one for the sled.

I bought a Zumo 220. It's waterproof and has the same platform as the Nuvi. It comes with a mount that you can put on the handlebars also. I found one for $399 with free shipping.

I haven't used it a whole lot. I downloaded redpinemapping for it and I'm just now figuring out how to use the maps.

I just installed the 12v plug on my IQ so that I won't have to worry about running out of battery juice.

Not sure exactly what ya want, but check out the Garmin Oregon series. I have the Oregon 200 and really like it. I bought a RAM handle bar mount for it so it sits right beside my brake lever. I too have the 12V supply (cig lighter style). I rewired the outlet directly to the battery so the GPS stays on until I turn it off or unplug it.

I use a Nuvi 255w with RedPineMaps loaded in the same waterproof case Chitown uses. I've had great results so far this year with this setup, totally waterproof and the touch screen still works well.

I think this topic is discussed on a weekly basis. Should be able to find many suggestions and recommendations by searching.

You know, I tried that last night and came up with a message "no matches found", thats why I started this thread. Maybe I need more than a gps to navigate this site, must have put in somthing wrong. Just trying to learn what I can before plunking down the $$.

I think you'll get an overwhelming response FOR Garmin units. The NUVI series is nice if you want the bigger screen. The Oregon series is nice if you want something in the "handheld" category. Just go to Garmin's website and research away. Everything you read on any sled forums will be a matter of everyone's opinions. Just figure out what YOU want/need, and see what Garmin has for YOU. Good luck, youll like the GPS idea.

TomTom?

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have a TomTom one 130. Is there any reason it cant be used on a snowmobile? It seems pretty sealed. Or at the very least couldn't I get one of those waterproof cases?

Thanks for the info. I was on the garmin site and I guess I like the hand held, but was looking for opinions. Can you plug in the handhelds to 12v and mount them on the bars?

Does the snowmobile gps tell you where to turn at intersections like car gps or just show where you are at on a map ?

You would just have to find the maps to download into your unit. There are a lot like slepgps.com (i think) and redpinemapping.com. Start there and they can tell you what you need for your specific unit.

After doing some troubleshooting, I found out that on my Zumo you have to drag your destination to the trail when you're looking at the map. Then it will give you turn by turn directions. I have redpinemapping.

I have the Nuvi 500 with a hard wire kit and ram handle bar mount on my 08 nytro. We were riding up by International Falls last week in 24 below temp and it worked great. Love it. I programmed the lodge in it as home and when we wanted to go home all I have to do is put in go home and it takes me right back to the door. No more lost nights or trying to read maps. Love It. BTW I used red pine mapping.
