Southern home cooking chef and Food Network star Paula Deen was in the Piedmont Thursday, helping to feed thousands of North Carolina families.
As part of the Helping Hungry Homes campaign, Deen joined Smithfield Hams delivering 100,000 servings of protein to Second Harvest Food Bank.

"Smithfield and I made a commitment that we're going to try to feed 20 million people within a two-to-three-year period, and we're doing that, we're getting it done," Deen said. "We're now over 7 million people."

Deen said the cause was near and dear to her heart.

"I just adore the little children, and it would stagger us all if we knew the numbers of the children that are food deprived that go to bed hungry, and the elderly, it's like a staggering number," Deen said.

Nationwide, food banks are reporting a 25 percent increase in the number of people they serve. It's no different in the Triad, where they've seen a 10 percent increase in needs over the last two years.

"We're serving today, more than a quarter of a million people, up from just over 100,000 from this time last year, and the number is growing," Clyde Fitzgerald, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank, said.

But with donations like this one, thousands of area children and their parents are getting the nutritious and well-balanced meals they need.

"The food banks get a lot of canned goods, a lot of staples which they truly need and appreciate, but they tell us continuously, protein is the hardest thing to come by," Dennis Pittman, with Smithfield, said.

And Deen said it's just another way to ensure children are healthy.

"Protein is so so important for our children's brain development, so I'm so thankful for Smithfield, like I said and their generosity, to share their protein," Deen said.
