Have a chance to pick up a ZR440 sno pro for a really good price. Sled would be for ditch banging and backup sled. Have been reading and sounds like jetting is a big thing with these sleds and also retarding and advancing the timming with the dial. Was just curious if anyone had any thoughts on this sled and what to look for or do or if should possibly just pass on it. Thanks guys

Fun sled at the correct price for sure! That vintage for Cat was a tough one for clutches and suspensions. Do a real good inspection of the entire machine and pull compression on the motor. To get optimum performance jetting was a key on these about every 10 to 15 degrees. They do however take well to the Holtzman Variflow or Tempaflow that takes some of the jetting out of the equation. Just remember it is a high strung race sled that is now 15 years old and typically not babied or jetted correct for that matter. How many miles, at a glance how did it look?

I did find out also the sled is a 2001 actually i checked commpression on both cylinders and was good between 90 and 100. Guy told me sled has not been rode in about 3 years and went to start last year and would run but when gave throttle would die out and he never investigated into it any farther. I goin to pull carbs and look into them and see what jetting is and i heard these had a needle recall or a needle they reccomened for trail rididng?

Also be aware that this sled was designed to run on race gas. Unless the trail head has been installed be sure you are using race fuel and be sure to run 91+ octane if the trail head has been installed.
Like fish633 and Mezz have said, compression is very low and if uneven is a tell tale sign that the motor is down. It would be a great idea to pull compression with a different gauge! One that someone uses often and knows how it reads.

I thought compression was low too but wasn't sure cause both cylinders were same but i have since got different gauge and is reading much better. I did pick up sled for $950 didnt think could go wrong with that gonna go thru carbs and see what all i need. As far as different heads from what i have seen u can run 91+ pump gas with stock heads u just should retard the timming and adjust the jets accordingly. Anyone have any input on this?
