tile question

I know we have some tile experts on these forums so I'm looking for some expertise. I do have some experience with installing tile as I did the tile work in our cabin, both the downstairs on a cement slab and an upstairs bathroom, but that was new construction.

My wife wants to put new tile in one area of our house. It would cover the entry way, 3 closets, and a small bathroom. I don't yet know what there is for a subfloor beneath this tile, not sure if they set it right on plywood or if they used cement board. My question is when I tear it up, if it is on cement board do I replace the cement board or can I just lay the new tile back over the existing cement board?

Thanks!

Depends if they used a "polymer" in the thin set, if they did it's all gonna come out in little pieces. I'd pm polarisrider about this one. I've done enough, but I'm sure he's got more exp, wisdom then me.

tear it up, the cement board will be damaged severely trying to get the tile up. Have fun, this is what sent me to back surgery.
