I try to do it when I think of it as it prevents your wipers from freezing to the windshield which is very hard on the wiper's rubber when you break them free.

I do that on my F150 all the time when it snows, makes it easier to clean the windshield when you gat a couple of inches of the wet heavy stuff. X2 on the freezing of the wiper blades to the winshield when it gets a little warm and wet and then the temp drops quickly.

On Most GM Trucks the wipers only come up about 3 inches, there is a tab on the side of the base that pulls out about 1/8 of an inch and holds your wipers off of the windshield...

That and also if they get a heavy or large snow fall it's hard on the wiper arm if all the snow piles up on the windshield and pushes down (towards the hood) on the wiper arm.

I do this all the time. Beats pealing off the wiper when it freezes to the windshield and then rapping it against the wind shield multiple times to clear the ice build up on the blade, etc.
