Towing a 2 place with a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Sport

Does anyone have any knowledge in regards to pulling a 2 place enclosed with a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Sport (3.7 Liter, 2door)? I've towed locally and the vehicle handles great, but I'm wondering if I play it safe, would it be OK to tow longer distances? The trailer fully loaded weighs in at about 2100 lbs.

Does anyone have any experience towing with a similar vehicle type 200+ miles?

No problem whatsoever. I used to pull 2 mtn sleds with enclosed 12' trailer with a ford escape 3.0 to MI every other weekend (150miles one way) and the jeep is 10 times the truck a ford escape is. You wont have any trouble. You may just want to make sure to keep it out of overdrive if you have that option. Thats really not much weight for that truck. I would say you could do 3000 before it got a little hairy and even then it wouldnt be terrible

yea you can there isnt much to it. they arent real expensive and it would help. but still dont think you will have trouble even without. People pull boats with cars all the time.

2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7

I pulled 2 place enclosed with 2 sleds and all gear for 3yrs with the Jeep Liberty. No problems except for quick stops. Braking without ABS sometimes made it interesting. Power was ample for the weight(2000lbs).

absolutely correct, 4.0 L. Thanks for the info.

Anyone have any suggestions for removable Side Mirror extenders to see around the wider trailer?

No problems what so ever until the day we were trailering with 30+ mph winds. Roads were 2 tracks from the snow and as soon as a big gust hit we were all over the road. Two hands on the wheel at all times is a must during those conditions.

As far as the vehicle, ditto on all other comments.

Pulled a 2 place enclosed from Hampshire IL to the snowies in WY with my 2005 Dodge Dakota quad cab this past march. While not a premium tow machine the transmission screamed all the way up the mountains only to deliver us to snowmobile heaven. Guy that came with me couldnt believe we made it. Tires were due to be changed too but we gave it a go anyway. Best snowmobile trip I have ever been on. Anyhow 3.7L V6 enjoyed going home downhill much better than going up hill but still a good truck. My everyday driver.

Great. Have you heard of adding a transmission cooler?

Thanks for the reply.

Your Jeep already has a cooler on it. If your transmission is contantly shifting up and down make sure you just choose the next lower gear or turn off your overdrive. Friction causes heat and heat kills transmissions. You only get friction from shifting. No shifting, no excessive heat buildup!

By the way I have that 4.0 Ltr in my 2007 Chrysler Pacifica with the Mercedes 6 speed transmission. The 4.0 Ltr is a beast! When I take it out of overdrive it pulls my loaded 2 place just fine! I do prefer towing with my Yukon though. Pacifica is my back-up vehicle.

I had the same 05 Jeep just in the Sahara edition and towed a two place for two seasons. Like others said there is no power issue, only issues I had was the wind factor that was mentioned and a short wheel base. The short base just makes you more prone to kicking the rear end out when you hit a patch of ice or snow in a flash as opposed to a pickup or other long chassis where you can feel the rear end slowly begin to slide. I learned of this on one trip where the temp was hovering around the freezing point and I was cruising at hwy speed when I was crossed an over pass which had frozen before the ground pavement (like the signs always say) and my back end kick out before I could let off the gas. Luckily it wasn't enough to lose control but it was enough to scare the &*^% out of me and caused me to let off the gas every time I crossed another over pass for the rest of the trip.
Other than that, enjoy your trips with it, brought back some good memories of that Jeep for me...

little giant

Power no problem (nice torque from the 4.0 ho at low RPM 225'lb) Keep the trans cool (RV cooler in mine) Leave lots of room for braking, about 80% is on the front wheels and on that short wheelbase, back end lets loose quick. And lastly, wind (or semi's) are not your friends.

(could't do it without the trailer brakes and 1500lbs overload springs)

I've definitely noticed the wind factor even on my short trips, but the "bridges may freeze before roads" factor is a great caution look-out.

How was your gas mileage with the Sahara??

From what I remember it was between 12 and 13 pulling both sleds depending on the wind. It was manual and I never left 4th. I rarely topped anything over 70 with it unless it was down hill.
