Indiana landowners looking to keep their private property private will soon be able to swap out easily damaged or stolen "No Trespassing" signs for a few lines of purple paint.

Starting Sunday, House Enrolled Act1233 will allow Hoosiers to mark their property and prohibit trespassing by marking vertical purple paint lines on trees and posts.

The law's author, Rep. Dave Wolkins, said property owners will no longer have to spend money on building and maintaining fences or signs that may fade or be removed.

The law says that the purple marks may be placed on trees as a vertical line of at least 8 inches in length, and with the bottom of the mark at least 3 feet and not more than 5 feet from the ground.

Marked trees may not be more than 100 feet from the nearest other marked tree.

Purple marks can also be on a post with the mark covering at least the top 2 inches of the post, and with the bottom of the mark at least 3 feet and not more than 5 feet 6 inches from the ground.

A marked post cannot be more than 36 feet from the nearest other marked post
