Trail 2 from Escanaba to Rapid River

Ya, I was on the fishweb too and saw that it looked like trail 2 went straight through, but then wondered seeing as how the DNR site didnt have a "complete" trail through there.

I was really looking for some confirmation from maybe a local that knows about this personally, thanks Wags for your time tho.

There is quite a bit of incomplete or mis-information on the fishweb maps with regards to Marquette and Alger counties. I can't speak to any of the others.

I had the same question earlier this season, and got mixed answers,...my understanding is that if you are willing to cross the ice you can get through to the east but the actual trail systen through there is sketchy.

By ice I am assuming you mean Big Bay DeNoc. Do you know if the trail comes to the ice, is it signed well and hows BBDN ice this year?

anyone? TTT

Unless something has changed from last year the trial ends in Escanaba. There is no easy way to get to the bay from where the trails ends. If and when you do find a way to the bay it's a very long ride on the ice. There are some spots that don't freeze well in the narrows one must be very careful. Trail not easy to find once off the ice. The trail use to connect Escanaba to Rapid River but I believe there is a landowner dispute. I would take a different route. Just my opinion.

From website

you can go anywhere! Delta County’s snowmobile trails are a part of the state’s vast trail system in the Upper Peninsula. And with the U.P.’s large forested areas and unplowed roads, traveling by snowmobile may be the only way to experience the U.P. in winter.

“There’s lots of woods, lots to see.” says the coordinator of the Bays de Noc Convention and Visitors Bureau in Escanaba. “I like to snowmobile at a slow pace to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the area.”

She suggests using Escanaba, Gladstone or Rapid River as a central point to exploring the region. “You can get anywhere you want in the Upper Peninsula from here,” she said. “From Rapid River you can head north to Munising or east to Manistique. You can access many of the trails, and we have a mild enough winter to do other things here.” Delta County, Michigan Escanaba and Gladstone Area

The trail in Delta County is split into two parts. Efforts are being made to connect the trails across the Whitefish River near Rapid River, but for now the Felch Grade trail ends about a half mile north on Rapid River on U.S. 41 and the Nahma Grade has a trailhead on County Road 509 east of Rapid River.

The Nahma Grade trail travels east from Rapid River to Federal Forest Highway 13. Turning south at that junction takes you to U.S. 2. Turning north at the junction takes you to another trailhead that splits in two – east to the Garden Peninsula and Manistique, and north toward Munising, on Big Bay de Noc, is a small community with restaurants, bars, a service station and small shops.

Rapid River is slightly larger community with small motels, restaurants, bars, service stations, stores and a snowmobile dealer. There are several service stations near downtown on U.S. 2 and two other service stations where U.S. 2 and 41 join just west of town.

The Nahma Grade trail is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service which has a district office in Rapid River. The Felch Grade trail that heads west out of Rapid River is maintained by the Michigan DNR which has a district office in Escanaba. “The trail is flat with some of it running on county roads,” said Russ McDonald, DNR recreation officer. “There’s a couple of spots that it goes through swamps which causes some problems early in the year.” Michigan’s snowmobile season lasts for 16 weeks, from December 1 to March 31. But it depends on winter conditions. Less snow falls in the Bays de Noc area compared to many other parts of the peninsula, so McDonald suggests checking on trail conditions.

The Felch Grade travels west through Delta County. “From here, you can get up to Gwinn or over to Iron Mountain,” McDonald said. “There are some trails that are not state funded that go into Wisconsin.” The Felch Grade runs directly towards Crystal Falls with several breaks toward the Iron Mountain area. Past LaBranche, the trail also turns north toward Gwinn which then splits to Marquette or Munising. In Escanaba, the trailhead appears next to the Days Inn on the west side of North Lincoln Road and U.S. 2, 41 and M-35. A snowmobile dealer is also located at the trailhead.

snobuilder,

I don't know where you got your information about the Nahma Grade trail but it's not quite correct. The Nahma Grade Trail is maintained/groomed by the Big Bay de Noc/Cabin Fever Cruisers club out of their garage just south of Mac's Bar on U.S. 2. We were just at their fundraiser in Cooks last night. Far as I know the Forest Service does not maintain any trail in this entire area.......it's all done by the club above or the Schoolcraft County Snowmobile Assoc. if you're talking slightly further east.

Thats a C&P from there website,.....only posted it because many say its an area that does not connect up , yet there site sez "you can get anywhere from here",....I'm thinkin they mean IF YOU HAVE A TRAILER!!!!!

Sounds like you know the area, ...can you answer the posts topic?
My post from a couple months back was asking if trail 2 ,....or any other trail,....connects the west side grade through Esc., Gadstone, and Rapid River to continue east?

Yes please! Too late for me but others on the site might like a straight answer. Unfortunately I couldn't even get any information from Chamber of Commerce or a couple of lodging facilities in Escanaba so we made reservations in Manistique and will stay clear of that area all together. Too bad that from the sounds of it Trail 2 doesn't go all the way through to RR from Esky and it;s even worse that no one in the area seems to be able to give anyone else a straight answer. I didn't do too much investigating but I figured a 1 post on here and 3 phone calls was enough of my time. It's a shame, because I am sure there is alot more revenue lost during the winter months in the Escanaba than just our one or two night stay.

Can I answer? Yeah, I can speak with a little knowledge......I live 20 mi. north of Mac's right on Fed Forest Hwy 13.......problem is I don't ride south that often because the snow is not that good......especially this year. I've never been further west and south than Rapid River, by sled that is. We go to Escanaba for groceries and I know there is a sign right adjacent to the U.P. State Fairgrounds that "says" it connects to a trail but I've never even thought about trying it.

I do know for a fact that when you get on Trail 2 west bound about 5 mi. north of Mac's (off of the Nahma Grade Trail, i.e. 411 I think the "new" number is) you can only go about 7 or so miles west before you run into a trailhead deadend on that trail. If the trail continues west, and that's a BIG if, it's not well marked at all. I do have one acquaintance from another site who rides from his house in Escanaba so I'll try to get ahold of him to give you a more accurate answer.

Just to let you know I haven't forgotten........still haven't heard back from my friend from Escanaba and not enough snow south of us to go check it out myself.

I used to live in Gladstone on the Bluff near the ski hill. We tried once to ride from our house through Escanaba. I can't say it was a great ride. The trail was not very well maintained and there were areas toward Escanaba that were tough to navigate. If I remember right, the trail wasn't marked very well between Gladstone and Escanaba. We made it through, but I didn't enjoy the ride much.

The snowmobile trails in the area are not connected. The trail from Escanaba basically ends somewhere north of Gladstone. The trail picks up again in Rapid River. If believe part of the issue in connecting the trails may have something to do with building a bridge over Rapid River and the Whitefish River. There could be property access issues as well. I heard there is a way to get from Gladstone to the Bay and then cross the Bay into Rapid River, but it wasn't worth the effort in my opinion. There is also the issue with having enough snow to ride in the area. I have a feeling that the lack of snow is part of the reason there is a lack of effort in maintaining the trail through Escanaba. Since we used to have a camp just south of Munising, we didn't bother trying to ride from our house.
