John ,what type of equipment do you need? Is it supplied or should people bring their own? Is this a organized event or a FREE FOR ALL lol. Trying to make an informed decision before traveling 7 hours. Does this go on rain or shine? ALL the trail riding in MY neck of the woods was CLOSED last year. Besides I like YOUR neck of the woods MUCH MORE. Any and all info appreciated, THANKS SwampCat

You don't have to bring anything to the trail brushing event, but if you want a 4 wheel drive vehicle or ATV is nice to have. We typically do more signing than actual tree or brush cutting, so saws can be helpful, but mainly it is just digging holes in the ground to plant the posts into and then put the signs up. I suppose if anyone had a motorized post hole digger, that would be a nice thing to have!

It is an organized event (by me). We split up into groups, each group has a "leader" who is trained in the proper way to mark trails according to the DNRE. Each group then has a specific area that they take care of. We all head out in the AM, come back in the PM and have a good time.

It is a rain or shine event, so proper outerwear is a must. The weather that time of the year can range from upper 50's and low 60's and sun to 40's with rain or even 30's and some wet snow.

Two years ago the weather was perfect, last year not so good, but I hear everyone still had fun and got lots of work done.

In as much as a power auger would be nice, there is too much rock for that, unless it's an industrial unit operated by hydraulics off of the back of a truck! I could see someone getting swung around violently with a hand held unit...LOL! :eek:Nonetheless, it's a good time even if you have to use a wrecking bar & post hole digger. If there is too much rock, put'er in a stand & call it good. A day out in the woods helping out, priceless.-Mezz

It was a blast last year. Even with the wet snow we had it was still a good time. I really enjoyed meeting with Troy and his family at LLB lodge. Nice to meets some other JD'ers also. Will be heading up again this year!!!

bring own atv's for trail work

Hi all;
my buddy and i are in the thinking stage now of driving up from Pa. for the trail work in Oct. as we both just love it there (been ridin sleds in the U.P. since 1991) and want to do our part to help. question is if we bring our ATV's do they have to be registered in Mich? in addition what tools would be needed? ie; digging bars, shovel, pruners, etc?

thanks for any suggestions!

You don't have to register them in Mi, but you do have to buy an atv trail permit, 16 dollars.
