Trail Mileage

Is there any place a person can find good info on trail mileage? I see the DNR maps show some mileage numbers, but that must be for entire length of a trail. We are planning our trip for January and would like to get an idea of mileage so we can plan accordingly.

Thanks.

Hmm, ya might have to resort to the old school way of using the scale on the side of the maps. At least I think most maps still have the scales on the side or in the corner somewhere..LOL...

mj54 --Where will your lodging be? You didn't mention from what area you would like information. With alittle more information maybe someone can help you.

Older maps

If you can find an older map there used to be one (I think it the Superior Snowmobile Club) that had mileages from different towns. If you are coming to the Western UP, I could fax or email you a copy.

Ask trails you want to ride & people will give you best guess on miles. Jders have ridden every trail in UP & most of northern Wi.

We are planning on staying on Lake Gogebic. Looking for 3 days worth of long rides. We were looking at heading to Iron River on 2, up 15 to 8, and back to Gogebic. We also thought about making run to Marquette, but thought we would trailer to location to make distance reasonable (200-225 mile roundtrip). The 3rd day want to head to Houghton and back. Any info would be great.

mj54,

I just emailed you the mileage chart from the 2004-2005 Superior Trails map. If anyone else could use it, let me know.

I've ridden that area for years and it's usuall better the more north and east you go. When you head up to Houghton, be sure to take the 13 loop behind Pat's Yamaha in Greenland that comes out at Twin Lakes. It's a 36 mile loop but it's at the top of my list of favorites. North of Bergland, you need to take 102 to 11 to Silver City, check out Lake of the Clouds while there, and then back down 1 to Bergland. It's only about 75-80 miles, but all 3 trails are awesome and different. 102 is a combo of tight and twisty, wide and fast and wide and slow turns, it has it all. Trail 11 is a 2 lane asphalt road in the summer and is double/triple wide and very fast for 16 miles. Snow will get thin around Silver City but 1 south is a fun trail too, especially south of White Pine. Before you take this loop, fill up in Bergland as there is no gas in Silver City or White Pine.

Also, the trails around Lake Gogebic can be fantastic as sleds like to jump on the lake and run them. Trail 1 and 13 south from the north end are usually pretty sweet. Have fun!

We rode last year out of Florence WI on 2, up to Lake Gogebic on 13, back east on 8, to 15 to 111 to 113, I think we were around 250mi for the day.

My maps up on the MSA Trail Reports page include distance between trail junctions. MSASnow.org and click on the Trail Reports link.

Drop me an email if you are looking for more in depth: jvalley@vvmapping.com

215 Miles

We also thought about making run to Marquette,

I've done Crystal Falls to Big Bay to Baraga and back down. Long day. Looking at 300 miles via the shortest route to round trip Big Bay from Gogebic.

Rather than running that far, there's lots of great trails near Gogebic.
I'd run to Lake of the Clouds, either via Ontonagon or Wakefield (or both) which will put you at 160-200 miles for the day. Another day I'd make a loop using 8 and 2 with connectors that were not already run the days before (like 107).

Once you get there you won't want to touch your trailer till you leave. No need to, unless of course, the snow is all melted around Gogebic. Heaven forbid!

Miles go by very quickly on 8 & 2 both well groomed grades more so on 2 maybe because less traffic but more piney than 8 until after IR then wide open views to Florence. I would take from LG 8E to 107 south connect to 2 east to IR then take 15 north back to 8W. 15 north back to 8 very tight twisty in places & remember no gas for a good 75-80 miles leaving IR with full tank. 15n very remote no place to stop & warm up but great ride.:)

New post, similar question. My wife, brother and sister inlaws will be riding the northern UP in mid-January. Here goes. Calumet 3 to 151 Eagle river back down to 130 to 3 to Copper Harbor to 135 to 134 to 132 to 3 and back to Calument. Any idea on distance or different route suggestions. Thanks.

100 Miles. Trail 133 over to Gay on the return is a better ride if it is open (lots of logging, it's open/closed a lot).
