Truck towing question

I have a 2014 Ford F-150 with the 5.0 V8. My son has a 27 foot X 6.5 foot Legend all aluminum enclosed trailer. I would like to pull this trailer to the UP with 3 sleds in it. The trailer weighs a little less than 2500 lbs empty. My son is convinced this is too much trailer for my F-150 to pull. I am going to put a set of Timbren suspension helper kits in the rear to make sure the back end of the truck doesn't sag too much. What are your thoughts on pulling this trailer with a F-150?

I have the same truck with a 7x22 Neo about 2,000. Empty pull three sleds no problem, for a more stable feeling I added rear air bags

Seriously, don't do anything. That's waaaay under your towing capacity. Your truck will tow it just fine. Here's the spec sheet from Ford themselves...

5 sleds (3000lb 2 are apex) in a 24 8.5 steel V enclosed car trailer (3400) dual use unit. Dual axel obviously. Very low to the ground. Tows like a dream.

1500 ram/ Timberns / winterforce LT tires. 10-12mpg. I can’t believe it either.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess a modern 1/2 ton can tow 4000-4500 lbs safely. Saying that with just a little bit of sarcasm.

So could most 3 row SUVs, like a Highlander or a Sorento.

well I'll be the odd ball out here and say its NOT the ability to PULL things that will be any issue
a 27 ft long trailer will catch a LOT of side wind, and that is where you will get white knuckles at times, NOTHING to do with power to pull it, you got that covered, with proper hitch set up,(MAYBE air bags,) you can for sure take the weight of trailer and sleds and even more

BUT when/IF things get windy, I think your in for a LONG drive!

old saying, just cause you can doesn;'t mean you should!

safety, is where I might have some worries, not power to pull it!
I would IF using this, be a LOT slower in my goings , sure it can be done, but heads up, its the wind that will be your biggest problem here!
all the more so if its a really short boxed truck,a s you didn;t list that info
good luck!

I pull a 20' enclosed with 4 sleds with a 2016 F150, 5.0, 3.55 rear end and it tows just fine. Mileage sucks but otherwise its fine.

Come on, when it gets windy any enclosed trailer for the most part you can feel it, we pull a 22 ft enclosed trailer with 5 atvs in it with 09 ford f-150 with the 5.4 liter, pulls it no problem, yes you have to pay attention, and we have a sway control bar on it. our trailer sits very high with the tires under it, the inlines pull a lot nicer.

Couldn't agree more! I have a 2018 Dodge 2500 diesel, and have not a problem pulling my enclosed inline 29ft trailer, 5 sleds in the trailer, 1 in the bed of the truck NO PROBLEM!

BUT.....when its windy and you pass a semi or come out from under a bridge if it is windy you will definitely feel it. Anybody that says you don't is flat out not telling the whole truth. I don't think I have ever felt a control issue, or worried about it, but you better believe you will know about it!

X2!!!!!!!!!!!! My 2017, 3.5 Eco, 3.55 gear, HD tow pkg, 6 1/2' box, LT tires, tows a whole lot more than you are talking of Wong. Properly load truck, and trailer as to weight distribution, and level your truck/trailer, you'll be good to go. I tow 12k, and over like a dream!!!

There is a difference on Fords between the pre-15s and the 15s on up. My similarly equipped 12 did not pull as well as my 15. Same motor, same rearends same everything. They changed more than the body for 15. However Wong should certainly have plenty of pickup for an inline. Just wind to worry about. And it will suck gas. But it is dumb to buy a 1 ton diesel just to use for 1 trip per year. Live with it.

I have a 27 foot enclosed that we tow 4 sleds in and last two years I had a 2012 f150 ecoboost and my brother in laws ecodiesel half ton ram. This year we'll be towing with my silverado half ton and his new ram half ton. Haven't had an issue. A bigger truck would obviously always be better though...

grub I am not sure on 2012 to 2015. My daughter in law had a 2011, and it would pull 9to 10K no problem. I was to buy a 2016, but dealer explained the 2017 would have a "new" 3.5 engine, and the 10 speed trans. So I waited and ordered the 17. My best riding bud has a 13 150, 3.5 Eco, 3.31 gear, 5 1/2' box. That truck is the one that finally sold me on the 3.5 Eco. My Garage Mans Companion engine dumped, so we used his truck on a snowmobile trip. He also pulls a 32' camper all over the country, and in the mountains is where the 3.5 turbo really shines. Just plain blows the 6.2 GM away, and bad. I spec'd my 17 out to tow as, 3.5 Eco, 10 spd, 3.55 gear, 6 1/2' box, HD tow pkg., it is a puller, and the best vehicle I've ever owned!!!

I’m very happy to read these opinions as I just bought a 2017 F-150 3.5 eco with 3.55 gears and 19,000 miles 5 1/2 box. I pull a 7x23 enclosed. My neighbor had a 2018 that has the same setup only with 3.31 gears. I was blow away with how it pulled and handled my trailer last season and we had 4 sleds in the trailer.

firefighter, the 6 1/2' box makes for a better tow vehicle, as in the longer wheel base stability. I knew I would be towing heavy loads. The longer wheel base is not as friendly in tight spots, but my wife doesn't seem to mind as that is her vehicle of choice to drive anywhere.

I agree. I went with the 6 1/2' box this time also and like it better for towing. I do struggle parking it though.

Does the truck have trailer brake controller? I am more concerned about stopping when towing than pulling down the road.

Mine does because I have the max tow package. To be honest last year I could not tell a difference in towing between my neighbors 18 Ford F-150 3.5 and my 2002 Chevy 2500 HD 6.0 other than the 3.5 has a lot more power than my truck did. I did drive my neighbors both up and back so I got the feel for how it pulled.

My truck is has the 5.5 ft box (with topper) with the tow package. The truck has the built in brake controller and large transmission cooler. Thanks for all the feedback, I feel much better about pulling the trailer now.
