Posting any new message will be sufficient to bring the thread to the top, and thus included in any search for "recent" postings. The forum's parsing engine does not recognize the "TTT" as anything but text, and so it isn't treated any differently.
I guess many folks use "TTT" for the benefit of the readers, just to answer the question "Why is this thread here?"
