Two brakes or four.

On a four place aluminum enclosed trailer with two axles, should both axles have brakes or just one? If only on one, the front or back axle? Thanks

trailer brakes

I have a four place aluminum trailer that came with only brakes on the front axle and I would burn them up every couple of seasons. Last time I replaced them I installed brakes on the rear axle also. What a difference in the braking of the trailer. I am going into my forth year now without repairing my brakes since I installed brakes on both axles. I would install brakes on both axles. The parts are pretty reasonable.

7" Dexter brakes are only rated to 2200# per axle and 10" are good up to 3500#. If you want to add an extra set you need to first check if your current axle has the mounting flange or you'll need to replace the whole axle... Cost is around $250 for the parts not on sale for the 7"...

not if you had the proper tow vehicles. Thats just not right....

This tow rig weighs 7700 lbs and still I use the brake controller for the 4 brakes AND I have lots of engine braking. BTW, those are 37" Tires load range "E".

If only on 1 axle, should be on the front so if the trailer seperates from the tow vehicle, the "brake-away" will apply current to the wheels with the most load. (10-15% of the load should be on the tongue)

Oh I see you got a toy truck. My "toy truck" is a Dodge Ram with CTD. I have no problem stopping 11k trailer+7.5K truck. But then again its made for hauling. BTW its got 35" tires load range E, 3750 lbs max load capacity tires, which stop easier than 37".

Course there will be the usual tears, and black dresses, but really now...how long to you expect her to mourn you...big ole dodge ram and all??? You could be using a Tarex when you hit the brakes on snowpack....life as YOU knew it is over!

Hauling without brakes is...how do I put this politely???

i have electric brakes on both axles on my 14' open aluminum 2009 aluma trailer, and brakes are not for woosies, i dont care what you drive, pulling any trailer downhill in an ice storm without trailer brakes, you will wish you had them, i have been there in many different trucks and trailer brakes are the only way to go, i use to have a 20' trailer with surge brakes on 1 axle and i slid down the gunflint trail for miles in an ice storm praying for dry pavement cause the surgeeeees dont work, but if i had electric i could have used the brake module to help slow the truck without worrying about spinning out.

Back to brakes, if you have a rocker style
floater between the axles the brakes should
be on the rear axle. If on the front the axle
will wrap and push the rear axle down causing
the front axle to raise and the brakes to skid.

The name is Dumass...

Hey Mr. No-Brake guy, we will all waive to your jackknifed rig in the ditch from the trailer pushing the back end of your "toy Dodge" around on you. You will get a nice view of your cab crunching the side of your trailer along the way, at least.

hookd on fonics werked fur me....

Wow reading comprehension skills are at not widely taught anymore, huh? My first response was to LVR1000 with towing a boat with a jeep wrangler.

My second response was to LVR1000 again and I was being sarcastic about him having to show off his Hummer.

No where did I say I dont use trailer brakes! Guess it to much to ask for the "smart guys" to learn to read.

zx6r1996, maybe you could learn to spell when you're learning reading comprehension.
