There is a news item today about two sisters that got stranded in a remote area of the UP and rescued by air lift. They survived for days on cheese puffs and girl scout cookies. Does anyone know where they were and why they were there?

I saw that. Weird story. Both in their 50s. One was from CO and one from Miissouri and were missing for 2 weeks in MI. Crisp Point I think it was where they were found.

This is a amazing story. They only had 8 boxes of Girl Scout cookies? There is only like 4 cookies in a box. I would have hiked out after the second box,in search of milk. Good thing they didn't have a joint with them.

Maybe that's what caused them to get lost, it was coming up on 4-20,

You ever see some one over 50 use a gps? Sure there are some that are ok and use technology. My mom is in 60's. Got a rental car with gps in it and got lost.... Just refuses to use it. Its to complicated..... Kills me.

Also there are still patches of snow on the trails around here (10 miles south of Munising). Got 4 wheeler and Wildcat stuck yesterday. You can prob still ride out in the plains.
Out where those women got lost I bet there is still over a foot on average.

I'm 62 and I was using a GPS before you were an evil thought in your daddy's libido. Not all of us over 50 are bereft of technological skill.

As I stated before..... "Sure there are some that are ok and use technology."
Not all but most.

I see it as an unwillingness / lack of interest in learning new things.
Like someone who says they don't know how to..... any thing. Cooking is a good one. I don't know how to cook. NO! You are not willing to learn.

Information is out there if you want it. Any one can learn about what ever they wish. Just have to be willing.

I am in my mid 40's. Both my parents fall in to this category of not willing to learn technology.
I know a lot of that generation who fall in the same boat.

Don't shoot the messenger. ;)

If the message is accurate I agree “don’t shoot the messenger”. Problem is you’re lumping a pretty large group into that category. If you would have said over 75 instead of over 50 you may be more accurate. The generalization you made was along the same lines as the ongoing argument that “most of those kids with backpacks are ruining the off trail for everyone because they don’t respect land owners”, or “everyone with a can is ruining our sport”. Both are false statements built on a small number individuals, then expanded to include everyone with similar characteristics.

As far as willing to learn new things vs being able to learn them I will agree that in some cases that is true, but it is not true that “anyone can learn anything they wish, they just have to be willing”. I have family members that cannot process information in the manner a gps provides it. My 90 year old mother cannot process how to use a smart phone or tablet, but she uses a laptop. I have another family member that cannot tell time on an analog clock because she cannot process 7:40 and 20 to 8 are the same, but she can tell time on a digital clock and functions just fine. There are learning blocks people have that prevent them from understanding the steps necessary to achieve a result that may seem easy for someone else. I’ve been with adults who are in tears because as hard as they try, they cannot learn how to use something so don’t tell me people just have to be “willing” to learn new things.

Sorry for the rant but you’ve hit a nerve and I’m tired of seeing groups of people lumped together under some unsubstantiated opinion and that stance is defended by saying “you’re just not trying hard enough”.

Maybe someone should tell you that “you’re not investing enough time into that person to find out what the real issue is”

So i lumped not willing to with not able to because they are physically disabled?
For this I apologize.

It is not up to me to spend time with every person of older age to learn.... Thats comical.

It was a general truthful observation. Had no intention of offending. Cant say any thing now a days with out being PC. Some one is always going to get bent out of shape. Take a deep breath.

Snocrazy, I’m not telling you to be PC. I’ve taken a deep breath and gone back and re-read your posts, the thing I’m taking exception to is your comment that “Anyone can learn about whatever they wish. Just have to be willing.” I’m not asking you to spend more time with every person either. I’m just saying don’t be so quick to pass judgement on an entire group of people because of some opinion you developed along the way.

I’m also interested that you jumped to assuming the individuals I mentioned were physically disabled. None of them are. My main point is that people learn in different ways and not everyone is able to comprehend things in the same manner as everyone else.

I apologized for the rant and acknowledged you hit a nerve before I even completed my comment. I probably won’t have even commented on your post if you hadn’t had seem so confident in your opinion when you closed with “Don’t shoot the messenger”. It just gets frustrating when people now days try to pass off their under informed opinions as absolute fact.

And lumped in there somewhere are those who are fully capable of using the technology (maybe too capable) and rely on GPS as the gospel. I know people like this. Ever seen a car or truck stuck on the sled trail because "that's where the GPS told them to go"? I have. While GPS is definitely a useful tool, it can and does make mistakes and is not always the right tool for the job. Still got to have some knowledge of the area and/or have a map and be able to use it.
