While I would not say there is a hunt-able population in Michigan, there are some concentrations of them in western Marquette county, from Big Bay south to Republic, and a decent number around Newberry and eastward.
Of course you can see them almost anywhere in the Upper, but those appear to be the highest concentration of those that are there.
I see tracks every year up in the Yellow Dog area, right over to Skanee.
They are beautiful animals and they are not nearly as afraid of humans as are deer. Make no mistake though...they are unpredictable during the rut, and at calving time and can inflict some serious harm to anyone who misjudges their passive behavior.
Between the brainworm and wolves, their numbers have never really taken off like the DNR hoped they would.
