UP 3G Coverage - iPad 2

Going to bite the bullet and get an iPad2 with the built in 3G. We have a place on Lake Gogebic where AT&T does not have 3G service (my iPhone only gets EDGE service). Does anyone know if Verizon has 3G coverage in the Gogebic area?

Edge works just fine on the iPad. I used it all the time at my cabin in northern Minnesota. I did notice last week that the service changed to over 3G and I did not see much of a performance boost. Great tool to have for weather, news, email and more.

No 3g service for ATT anywhere in the yoop yet. Supposed to get it in Houghton and Marquette soon. I think Verizon has 3g in those two towns and I think I have heard the tower in Rockland has 3g too (verizon).

McDonalds is a 3g hotspot for att. Many of us have wireless we leave open for cell usage too.

The new tower in Twin Lakes is working for att as of this week. Suprised me that it was installed as a 2g tower...seems like if you are doing a new one..you would want it up to date...i guess not.

Once again, perceived coverage is very dependent upon the merchandise. Some phones work very well, and others marginally. I could sit next to my friend traveling across the U.P. and get coverage well enough to use the phone while my friend had some so called super phone that was ready for use in Europe, and he couldn't get a single bar.

I agree that 2g and 3g are not big enough differences out in the sticks. Bit faster but not what I would call well worth it.

I have also heard it said (at least for AT&T) is that the biggest obstacle is building up the backhaul — the land line from their cell tower(s) to their main switch(es) — to handle the 3G/'4G' traffic.

Rocket I wish that were the case but if I really get away it means I can only be gone a few days at a time.... If I spend an hour everyday catching up I can be gone a week or more.

I have a Verizon BlackBerry and have good signal in most of the UP. They just put a new tower by Paulding that gets me the south end of the lake. Never used the browser north but I would guess you will get sig from Ironwood by then. My only bad spot so far that I have found is by Covington.

I just wish they had regular cell service in the central yoop by Munising. It's so spotty when you go south from Munising, I'm not sure how I'm going to survive.

Does anyone know if they're going to put one up in the Central yoop?
