I am an avid snowmobiler (from n. Ohio) but have never been on a ATV trip. I would like to rent a side x side and ride one or two days with my wife around 10/10/10. Keweenaw area or near is desired. Suggestions to the following is appreciated.
1) Where to rent a nice side by side in an area of decent trails?
2) How many miles a day are typical? (150/day on snowmobile is my speed)
3) I have vvmapping on my gps that shows the ORV trails as well as the
snowmobile trails. Is a side by side allowed on the marked ORV trails?
4) An area of scenic views is also a consideration.
5) Places of mid grade or better accomadations.
Thanks much for any help! Jim

Jim,

I am in now way trying to discourage you from using whatever map you have, but it is very important to the FUTURE of ORV/OHV/ATV riding in the Western UP it is very important that you ride on trails that are legally open to Wheeled vehicles. Many of our snowmobile trails ARE NOT OPEN to Side by Sides and/or ATV's...yet many maps show them to be open.

They do this simply to get people to buy their privately owned maps.

I am in no way using this GREAT forum to promote our Mi-TRALE map, however, the Mi-TRALE map is ACCURATE as to what IS open to OHV's/ORV's/ATV's. Plus the trails in the Mi-TRALE 5 Western UP Counties that are on the map are signed to let you know where you are and where you can legally ride. Go to the Mi-TRALE link on this website to find more information about getting a Mi-TRALE map.

Right now the colors are starting in many of the northern tiers of the Western UP. I don't think you are going to find great color at that time in some of the areas.

Again, I am not trying to discourage you from riding in the Keweenaw as that area is FANTASTIC and has a great ATV Club, the Keweenaw ATV Club. I'm sure we have members of that club on this forum that can help you.

If you want to go a little south of the Keweenaw, from Houghton County, all the way to Land O Lakes, Wisconsin, or to Iron River, Michigan, White Pine, Michigan, you can contact me.

Again, this is NOT to discourage anyone from visiting the Keweeenaw, as they have EXCELLENT ORV/OHV/ATV Trails, and they have a great ATV club.

I don't know who rents Side by Sides in that area. I am sure we have business's that do.

Thank you Skip for your reply! I would appreciate a response to your offer to provide like information on areas south of the Keweenew. Basically, I am looking for information in the western up area. Two days of riding will do the job for this trip. I fully understand the need for a MI-TRALE map and intend to obey all local trail regulations. Thanks, Jim

Jim,

This is tough, as I don't want all our Mi-TRALE friends and members, north of Houghton to think that I am trying to take business away from them. Especially when Mi-TRALE is trying to get all our UP ORV/OHV/ATV Groups to work together and get united.

If you decide to go from Houghton, south, you have about a week to ten days to see some great color in our Northern Mi-TRALE 5 Western UP County Trail System. The best color would be on the BN Trail to the Freda Trail and around. Even though the Freda Trail is south of Houghton, that trail is maintained by the Keweenaw ATV Club.

In about a week, the best color would be from Twin Lakes to Bergland. I HIGHLY reccommend the C Trail to the amazing C-Shaft Bluff overlook just a mile north of Rockland. You really have to see this to believe it, especially in the fall. If you have a chance, head to White Pine on the PF, and E Trails.

The First week of October, the best color and riding is from Paulding to Marenisco to Watersmeet to Iron River. While a portion of this riding would be on our SB Re-route, the HR Preferred Route, it is worth taking this in the Fall. Find some time to check out the very scenic Bond Waterfalls.

To get a map sent to you contact Peppermill Lodging, Running Bear Resort, Porcupine Lodge, Headwaters Polaris. You will find them on our www.mi-trale.org website.

Hope this helps.

Jim,

Another great contact is Dave and Lori at Wildlife Refuge Cabins, **** and Sandy at Krupp's Resort. Mi-TRALE has so many GREAT business members. I know I am forgetting some...I surely didn't mean too.

Hurry up, after today's Mi-TRALE Senior Citizen Ride, you simply will not believe the colors, especially on the BN (Bill Nichols) Trail. I just don't know how much longer they will last on that trail.

However we have hundreds of miles of other trails that I would think still have some time before we are at our peak.

Make sure you bring a camera, you will be amazed!
