Fatal Plane Crash in the U.P.
ST. IGNACE, MI - A grandfather and three of his granddaughters are dead after their small plane crashed along a Michigan interstate Tuesday.
According to the Mackinac County, Michigan Sheriff's Office, the plane began having problems shortly after takeoff.
After leaving the Mackinac County Airport, the twin engine plane hit a median along I-75 in St. Ignace, Michigan, flipped over and burst into flames.
The victims have been identified as 73-year-old Moshe Menora of Skokie, Illinois and his three granddaughters, 17-year-old Sara Klein; 16-year-old Rikki Menora; and 14-year-old Rachel Menora.
The lone survivor was 14-year-old Yossi Menora who was ejected from the plane and suffered burns to more than half his body.
All of the children were visiting the U.S. from Israel.
The family says Menora had taken his grandchildren on a day trip to Mackinac.
Tim Ahlborn, with the Mackinac County Sheriff's Office, says, "There were four fatalities. There was a 13 year old boy who was ejected from the airplane, he did suffer burns, he was transported by ambulance to Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace. Last I heard, he was being transported to a burn unit downstate."
He also says, "It's avery tragic situation. People coming Up North, not sure if they were visiting or not, but it ended in a tragedy."
Menora had been a pilot for about 30 years.
The NTSB has been called in to investigate the fatal crash.
