Looking for a little help....the wife and I are going to try to get away for a couple day Harley ride (not the easiest thing to accomplish with a 10 & 7 year old) and are considering possibly heading to the UP. We will be leaving Wausau early Sunday, August 22nd, and possibly looking to spend the night up towards the Keweenaw.

Can anybody throw some suggestions out as to some "must sees", scenery, good food, and a comfortable place to spend the night? Again, this will be a Sunday, so not sure if everything will be opened.

Just an fYI...., I'm a yooper transplant (born and raised in Ironwood), so I am certainly aware of what the UP has to offer, but it's been a long time since I've been up towards the northern tip.

Maybe, if we're lucky, we'll run into some fellow JD'ers---

Thanks in advnace for any input.

upbarleyboy - no elk in UP - and very very rare is moose in area of Copper Harbor to Paulding. We have bobcats, fox, wolves, bear, deer, cats, dogs, skunks, raccoons, porcupines, coyotes and other critters so do be on the watch. Only concentration of moose in the UP is Baraga. Marquette and north part of Dickenson Counties. Sometimes in the fall of the year, during their breeding season, bull moose will venture out of that area. Someone else mentioned in some of our deserts in the UP there have been reports of pink elephants and purple alligators in our swamps. What d'ya think??

PC, that is lower Mi, not upper. Nobody said there was no elk in Mi, just upper Mi. Slow down and read bro!

M26 along the lake is awesome, Brockway mountain drive of course. Misery Bay, my personal favorite, near Toivola.

Heck, it doesn't matter where you are in the Keweenaw, it all rocks!!

Whoa---I didn't say "no elk in Michigan". I said "no elk in UP". UPBarleyboy mentioned riding into the Keweenaw area which is in the UP. Then Michael Adams responded referring to the UP followed by my response referencing the UP.
Yes, there are Elk herds in Northeast Lower Michigan and there is a hunt by the hunting lotto system for that area.
There are all kinds of animals for hunt in private game preserves in the State of Michigan. These are fenced areas for organized hunting for a fee.

Back to the main question. The Ramada in Hancock is a nice place to stay. It has a bar and restaurant. Running Bear Resort, you can't beat the hospitality, and the nice clean cabins. Maybe Krupps or the Mariner North or The Pines. We have had good food at the Ramada or Nutinis in Hancock. It doesn't really matter where you stay or eat, it more than likely will be a positive visit. You can't go wrong in the U.P.

upbarleyboy, you'll have to drive by our place on the way up, stop by and say HI :)
or you could stay here one night (we give a good deal to JD'ers), check out Bond and Agate waterfalls, paulding light, then head north from here

Henrys in Rockland is a good stop for food Monday $1 burgers, Friday great fish fry buffet and Old Victoria Settlement is there also, its pretty cool you can wander in the old bulidings and the road is paved all the way up to it, if you want to see the dam and reservoir (which is our favorite place) go past the settlement to the top of the hill then it turns to gravel for the rest of the way down the hill to the reservoir but its beautiful!

Have a great getaway!!

and as far as moose we are starting to see them down here west of Watersmeet they have been seen in the same area 2 years in a row now, I think we have a pair that may have settled in the area.

didnt mean to hijack.....and SKYLAR....there are some elk all over the state and UP....go down to the INTRODUCTIONS area and you will see they were released in WISCONSIN and surrounding states and have migrated towards MOUNT ARVIN and other areas

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk

and UPBARLEYBOY....there is a nice ride around GERMFASK and you can spend a night at the RIVERS EDGE BED AND BREAKFAST....and then have someone make ya breakfast thats the bomb....plus the dude has a man cave to party in at night....the wife will love u for it...plus you can ride hogs in the pictured rocks parks

I like the White House in Mohawk, nice folks. I bet Mrsrunningbear would take great care of you in Paulding along with the nice folks at Krupps. Henry's is a must do for Friday or Saturday night. check out the directory on this site and you won't go wrong!

I send this to all of my friends that stay at my place in Mass City........

Here are all things we've done and enjoyed. Remember that there are few "commercial" things to do in the U.P. which is a GOOD thing!

Our favorite swimming hole is Bob Lake. It's a Federal campground/day use area about 30 minutes away in the middle of nowhere but it has an awesome swimming beach, good fishing from shore and peace and quiet. If you are there during the week you'll most likely have the whole place to yourself. The beach is sand and the water is warm and not too deep for your kids. Awesome awesome awesome! Free!

Ontonagon Twp Park is right on Lake Superior and is 15 minutes away in Ontonagon. You can do campfires there and watch the sunset. The Lake is very warm this year and good for swimming. Free! Ontonagon has a Groceries and a handful of other stores. Syls restaurant has great breakfast. You may find a boat charter there too.

Porcupine Mountains is an awesome place for mini hikes that are ok for little ones and a great place for sight seeing. Make sure to see Lake of Clouds outlook, Summit Peak outlook and Presque Isle Falls. All can be driven too and are within the park. WAY awesome!!!! This trip is a full day. 40 minutes away. Vehicle pass required.

Take another day and drive to Copper Harbor. Before going on to it though stop in Houghton Michigan at the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce. They will give you details of "what to do" on your trip to Copper Harbor. Make sure to pick up maps for the waterfalls and lighthouses. On the way home be sure to stop in Gay, MI and visit The Gay Bar. It's not a gay bar but named after the town of Gay. Way funny! This trip will be a full day! Houghton has many commercial type stores. Movies, Wal-Mart, Applebees etc. You can charter a boat here but I would recommend waiting until you get to Copper Harbor to do a charter boat.

Another great spot for a beach sunset and fire by the lake is the Agate Beach near Toivola. The whole beach is agate stones. Very peaceful place to take in a sunset, have a fire, skip rocks ad maybe swim a little. 40 minutes away from Mass City. Free!

We've also done a copper mine tour at http://www.adventureminetours.com/index.html . It's 5 minutes away and is a good tour for the money.

Other misc things to do but not a priority would be the Henry Ford sawmill near L'Anse, Fr. Baraga Shrine in Baraga, Bond Falls south of Bruce Crossing, Paulding Light near Paulding(south of Bruce Crossing), There's also more swimming and awesome fishing in Twin Lakes (technically Toivola) and Lake Gogebic in Bergland. These are all 30 - 40 minutes away. All are free!

Lastly, near Rockland (10 minutes away) is the Victoria Dam. Good fishing. Also some historic sites. Free!
