Watersmeet & land o lakes

WATERSMEET - Yesterday I posted a report on the "Thunder Riders " trails which I had rode. Yesterday afternoon I was reading the MSA trail reports as to the condition of their trails that the club had reported as of the 9th. With this report in mind, last night I rode their trails again, as I was skeptical of their report.

The club reported that Trail 3N from Land o Lakes to Watersmeet was in "very good" condition. Yes there had been a groomer on that trail that could be told by how smooth it was on the sides. There was good snow and no bare spots. However the ever present moguls, cratered approaches and exits from bridges and washboard straight aways hardly grade any better than a FAIR!

Just because a club runs down a trail with a groomer doesn't mean that the trail is groomed!! Alot of groomers tell us they always need more snow to fill in the bumps......yeah, that helps ......but in order to get that trail smooth it needs to be ground down and repacked, and froze.

Watersmeet used to have some of the best trails in the U.P.. If I recall they even got "Groomer of the Year" some years back for having excellent trails. What has happened in the last 3 to 4 years? It is sad that we have to leave on a crosscountry tour across the U.P. and come back here and the trails in Watersmeet have consistently been the worst.

I realize that every club puts in alot of hard work on brushing, signing and grooming their trails year after year and we all thank you for all that hard work. But there needs to be more done in Watersmeet.

LAND O LAKES - ran into the groomer coming back from Bent's Camp 2nd night in a row! Grooming at night, cutting down the bumps.....PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND THANK YOU!!!!! Its nice to be a member of a club that cares about their trails!

WW I feel your pain as we both are big mile riders and can easily make trail comparisons town to town. It s extremely frustrating to witness the same club with bad grooms time after time. Lando Frosty Club identified the grooming problem and fixed it by new people getting involved in leadership roles. The past leadership was well intended but too busy with life to follow thru. I’m not sure what is happening with Watersmeet these days but not releasing groomers until 1 foot policy is antiquated in low snow seasons. The new norm in most of Vilas is to start grooming and panning as soon as you have 4 inches and cold temps. Eagle River is a good example of how to make the most of what you have and the new norm imo. There are clubs in Vilas that sit wait too long you know who they are when you see frozen bumps and moguls and mentioned one of offender in your recent trail reports. Complaints to business in a low quality grooming areas usually helps a lot to turn things around. You can also attend club meetings and formally air your platform in a business like manner. Most club meetings are open to the public and I have attended a few without being a member just to get a feel for their business environment. Good luck and I hope you pursue your passion for good trails and snowmobiling.

I wonder if you'd like to be a driver for Watersmeet? Sounds like you've done it before?

after reading the MSA trail report.... I too was disappointed in trail 2 east, trail 3 south and trail 3 north in WM trail system....
then around 4pm yesterday I pass the groomer in front of Polaris dealer and observed the only thing on the drag touching the trail was the back edge of the drag..... I don't know much about grooming (never done it) but that was not smoothing the trail or grooming the trail

My observation would be someone needs to teach the driver how to use the equipment
thanks to all that take the time to run the groomers. much appreciated.....Lets go ride

I would love to Mr. Bear! I'd also like to open up Da Flowage again!lol 5 more years and there will be alot more time and I would love to get majorly involved in trail work, right now its just chasing snowflakes and riding around work until retirement.

Heard that you guys are looking for some grooming operators, if thats the case, we'll get the word out and try and help when we can. I realize that you have a business to run and its not always easy for you to get out.

ya dere eh.......too much peach schnapps waiting for snow and good trails! More riding and less sitting home partying......(that doesn' t really sound like "Team Obnoxious eh!) Hate to say it but may have to go home to work............. Da wife and kid will be up this afternoon, if you wanna ride give me a call. For the most part trails up here are real good right now. However, Eagle River "weeks" have started and theres already been an increase in traffic.

That's nice to know that in the future the club may have some serious help, they really need it. Yes my grooming days were over years ago due a car accident and we are lucky to be so busy at the resort now. Still go out with the hubby when he grooms every now and then

Traffic...... you want to see sleds, you should have seen all the sleds at Gogebic Lodge on Saturday 1/12/19 must have been 150 sleds parked on the lake. but funny thing, we never ran into a lot of sleds on the trail. but when we did, they were large groups of 8 and 10 at a time. rode 140 miles. 2 west to Merinesco, up to 8 to top end of Gogebic and down 100 to Merinsco. yes, old 100 is open again at the bottom of Lake Gogebic. not well know for now.

We stayed at the casino in Watersmeet and rode 460 miles in three days. Everywhere was good to great with the exception of the grade in and out of Watersmeet. It is not for lack of grooming, as i went down the grade shortly after grooming and no different. They are not cutting the chop out of the trail and reforms quickly into rollers
