Weird clutch problem on a SkiDoo

So I have a 2010 GSX 600 h.o. with about 7k miles. Ridden well but not abused. For the last two seasons the belt has been vibrating heavily when at a steady cruze. 25- 35- 55- 70 mph doesn't matter. If at a steady throttle it will vibrate. I rode the sled with the clutches/belt exposed and watched the top of the belt vibrate up and down about a 1/2" between the clutches. It feels like the clutches are not keeping the right tension on the belt. Yes I have the right belt and I have adjusted the secondary so the belts sits right. My thoughts are a worn out primary spring or a worn out bushing or something. I am mechanically inclined and nothing looks out of place. Any help or a referral to a sled shop that could help me get back to original would help. Adding a $400 clutch kit won't help me. Thanks! Andy

You don't specify whether or not you have had the clutches serviced. 7k miles with no service whatsoever and there could be a lot of things worn out. Take it to a skidoo dealer and have them freshen it up.

when it does that it can be a couple o tings...one is the spring which when you look at it from outside looks fine....but if you was to take it all apart there can be a hairline crack that only makes the spring act sporadic under power then the springs snaps back into crack and you cannot see anything wrong.....broken spring....the tuther one is the sheeves have glaze spots of the belt has glaze spots....you can remedy this by scotch brite both inside sheeves to make clean and or replace belt....hope that helps

PS....one time but very rare....the wheels (I ride cats) on the helix had small flat spots on them...check your rollers or pucks or whatever doo uses for spots

With the engine off and the belt removed, run your hand on both inner and outer primary clutch faces. Feel for any irregularities. The clutch faces should be smooth and straight. They should have a gradual, smooth taper from the edge to the center shaft. Are there any dips, ridges, or hour-glass shapes worn into it? A friend of mine had an issue on his primary clutch where the clutch faces had a distinct hourglass shape worn into them (machine was about 7K miles, 08 doo gade). If I recall, it was either the outer movable sheave, or the inner stationary one that had the hourglass shape worn into it. The belt would slip when it would get to these hourglass spots in the clutch face, usually around 60 MPH, and the belt would blow due to the buildup of heat.

Rollers, weights, bushings, these should be checked every 3 thousand miles or every season. I would suspect after 7 thousand miles, these are the issue, or the cause of a greater one, that being worn clutch faces. Time to have it serviced before it implodes on you & leaves you stuck.-Mezz

If you have a clutch compression tool (3/4" threaded rod welded to a plate, big washer and nut), all you need is a new primary spring and this

After you remove the circlip, you can tap the old bushing out with a punch, being careful not to damage the seating surface on the sheave. Kit comes with a new bushing, you could use a press, PVC or pipe with the same diameter to drive it in. Your dealer would probably do the bushing for you for a small fee.

You need to clean and check out your TRA primary. They are very durable, and usually will go 2 to 3 times the miles of "fly weight clutches", before need of rebuild. Sounds as if you have a bushing, and, or, roller issue. Some of the newer Doo parts aren't what they used be. I really, and highly recommend "Fett Bros" for your clutch parts/kit as needed. They are a easy clutch to work on. Fett's are real good to work with too.

Thanks for the responses. New belt had the same problem. I think it will be going to the shop for someone with the right tools to upgrade some worn out movable parts.

If you are mechanically inclined, order your rebuild kit, go online to you tube and watch videos on how to do ski doo clutches. You will just need 3/4" ready rod with two nuts and couple oversized washers. Very easy to do.
