Were going to try ishpeming this year any advice?

Ishpeming

I lived in Ishpeming for many years and it is a great place to ride. You will not get as much traffic as the West UP and may have to plan your fuel stops. Try the loop from Ishpeming to Marquette then North to Big Bay,fill up and head west and then dwon to Michigamee area and back to Ishpeming. Usually lots of snow in this area. Gwinn area is also nice and west towards South of Republic and back to Ishpeming. If your up to it do a backpack to Bergland and back.I never travelled east to Munising.Have a great trip!

If you head up to Big Bay, Trail 5 has a new re-route.......was 26 miles of twistys,then became 34 miles of twistys........now unsure. the Kenikott Mine Co. is really going gangbusters up that way with the new sulfide mine. according to MSA,a whole new trail being put through there as we speak.......contact Big Bay 550 snowmobile club, they should be able to direct you on the best route.
depending on your riding style you can EASILY make Copper Harbor in 7 or 8 hours and see the Brockway Mountains and Superior in daylight,spend the night,and take a somewhat different way back.
not sure if a food/drink stop is open yet after the fire in Sidnaw,but it's a nice ride. LONG way down to the Tall Pines/Rusty Sawblade in Amasa from there,but a great loop back thru Republic on the way to Ishpeming........
Gwinn is a great loop. make sure to stop at the Tailwinds.....great place.
Munising is nice,but it can get VERY busy on trails over that way,even more so on weekends. during the week it's nice.

Look up camel riders. Nice cabins in the woods with full service restaurant and Gas!!!! Call ahead to get their hrs of operation. Mrs Ott will make you a u.p. pasty for sure!!!

Great choice one thing I like if you look at a trail map you can do 4 maybe 5 different loops. Iv'e done the loop through Gwinn a number of times its really nice. Big Bay is a must.

Lakanen land East of Marquette is a neat little stop. Beware and travel slowly 30mph through Harvey/Chocolay township, but once you are through the 5 miles it is wide open to Lakanen land and the sculptures. I would also agree with Big Bay. Trail 5 up to Big Bay has some great off trail at the intersections midway through.

We did that trip last year for **** Week...had a great time...LOTS of riding.
Went down to Iron Mountain one day, Big Bay for a day, Munising for a day, Gwinn for a day (check out the Gwinn Air Force Base...pretty cool taking pictures of your sled next to a B52).

The long heralded "AAA" is now replaced by a trucking highway. The Kennikott Mine Co. has finaly secured all the permits they need to begin their sulfide mine operation. the stretch that was 'double groomed' when it REALLY snowed is no longer a trail. Remember the intersection of 5 and 14 where the Big Bay 550 club had a warming trailer???? That section is now closed. still dont know how far west till things get back to the old trail. Maybe the county line??? Still waiting for a update from Moose Country Snowmobile Club.

We did this trip last year as well and we all enjoyed it better than the typical Eagle River to Copper Harbor back pack trip. There was a lot less traffic and the snow was deep,we woke up one morning in the big bay area to a foot of new snow and broke trail. It was also nice stopping for lunch and not having to fight for a table. I did not plan the routes or trip so I can't help you with that, I pretty much follow but I liked it more than the Westen UP. Scenery was nice too!
