Western U.P. Campground Recommendation

Does anyone have recommendations on good campgrounds in the western U.P? We're looking for a place to use as a home base where we could visit Copper Harbor, the Porkies, and other points of interest this summer. Not really rustic campers, prefer a place with modern conveniences.

Campgrounds

Well,

There are plenty of nice campgrounds in the area. If you like state parks, McLains State Park is a great park with modern sites, electric, clean bathrooms and showers. you can make reservations on the State of Michigan (website http://www.midnrreservations.com/) DNR website. Cost for these sites ranges and are shown on the website but you can expect to pay around $25-$28 per night and you have to have a State Park sticker which will cost some more money (the State just recently went to a new park pass and for a resident of Michigan the cost is $10 for the pass when you re-up your car registration...not real sure about the cost for you if you are out of State?) Anyway, there are nice State Parks in Baraga (Baraga State Park), Copper Harbor (Fort Wilkins State Park), Twin Lakes (Twin Lakes State Park) and I believe the Porkies as well. All the State parks are very nice with modern sites and clean showers and restrooms.

If you are looking for a little smaller campground, I have a friend in Gay, MI that has a small campground with clean showers, bathrooms, full hook-up (water, sewer and electric). He also has a small marina for boats if that interests you. The campground is very clean and reasonably priced and if you are interested in more information or contact information feel free to email me at dennisrich1@charter.net. My family and I stayed there quite a bit last summer and the kids really enjoyed staying there. Very private with very clean sites, etc.

Now, there are also some local campgrounds that are also nice depending on what you are looking for. Hancock has a local campground just on the outskirts of town that is nice and I think you can get more information on Hancocks website (just look up Hancock, MI and you should find it). Houghton also has a small campground on the outskirts of town that may interest you. Again, just look up Houghton's website and you should find more information. Lake Linden also has a small campground and contact information should be available on their site as well.

I hope this helps and feel free to email me directly with any other specific questions since my family has stayed at almost all of the campgrounds that I have mentioned over the past 10 years. I hope you enjoy your time when you come up.

Good topic. What about a campground with larger sites? Need room for a 38ft motorhome, and place to store ATV trailer, and near some good, scenic ATV trails? Need electric and water. Sewer is nice, but not necessary if they have a dump station close by. Thanks

I would recommend the Baraga State Park or the Twin Lakes State Park. Both are in locations that you could head in any direction for a day trip.
