If you're looking to ride from your lodging, you're going to be out of luck wherever you end up if you want to stay IN Wetmore or Newberry. You'll probably have to trailer to a specific spot each morning. You might do well if you check out Winter Haven Motel up at Pine Stump Junction or Halfway Lake Resort, which is south of Pine Stump. I have heard to the west that Grand Marais and Seney clubs still were grooming, or had groomed recently. The trail into Newberry (I think it's trail 9) was getting pretty whooped out, as of Saturday, and some bare spots showing coming towards town. What I did see of the trails (431 and 9) they were still in pretty decent shape overall. Newberry itself would be near impossible to get in and out of, unless you don't care about your machine. There's also Redz Wolf Inn and Bunkhouse, but I don't know if he's still around or not, usually leaves this time of year when the sled traffic dwindles.

Winter Haven Motel - 906-658-3314
Halfway Lake Resort - 906-869-0098
Redz Wolf Inn - 906-658-3355

If you're looking to just 2-track it, there's still plenty of snow in northern Luce and eastern Alger Co. for that, I'd say still 40" on the ground. Keep in mind also, wherever you go, everything is pretty rock hard and icy.

Good luck!

yoopermike - you live there so I hate to contradict when I do not but I am seeing reports of no problem riding out of wetmore. Don at the Fox River Motel in Seney says you can ride out of town there too. Also hearing you can get in and out of Grand Marais. Also Calumet is good so long as you don't go to Copper Harbor. With snow on the way Wednesday it should get a little better. Please correct me if I am wrong here = specially since I am planning to come up to Seney Thursday night!

More specifically to your question I have seen reports that it is thinner in Newberry. So to answer your question I would pick Wetmore.

Or further North, if your that far, might as well come all the way up to the Keweenaw.-Mezz

Yooper Mike is right.
You'll never get of of Munising/Wetmore with out riding on bare pavement.
You'll have to trailer out.
The Seney motel is on the trail so I would think it will be easier to get on the trail there.
It will probably be hard to get into Grand Marais too.
All roads up there are bare, unless they get a major dump up there.

Actually that's not totally true.......getting gas at the Holiday station is a bit of an issue but 419 (the Wetmore spur trail) has snow on it right from the railroad tracks.......we rode 75 miles yesterday on Trails 8 & 7..........mostly really decent but Trail 8 east of 422(Miner's Castle) hasn't been done for a while........that's the section Seney started doing as of 2nd week of Feb.......I heard a rumor yesterday that Seney ran through their allocation and was out of funds to groom........can't confirm that for sure........yet.

Either way...

The OP is probably at his destination, so it really doesn't matter anymore.
Yes, Newberry proper has very little snow. Go north 4 miles though and
you get into it. Sorry to say Seney is thin also. I will post pics in the
morning. The trail along M77 is a nice mix of snirt, I wouldn't ride it unless
I had to. Hopefully we get a few more snows to finish the season.

Road last weekend and based out of wetmore. We trailered each day 15-20 miles to the park and ride. Road 8-88-888 and that area. All was great. Ride up to picture rock park and was great. Any off trail will be very hard and set up

Good luck.

Seney, last night. Don is stretching the truth a little, I'm sure he's hoping for the forecasted snow. You could definitely still ride, there is no denying that. But, the conditions are less than stellar until you get 4 miles north of M-28 to the trail-head parking lot on M-77.

It is snowing...we'll see how much we actually get.

We got 2 to 3" of fairly wet, "tight" snow here 16 mi. south of Wetmore.......don't know for sure how much up in town......would definitely be riding but for a minor ongoing health issue.......maybe tomorrow..........

Thanks for the continuing updates guys. I'm north bound in the morning. Granted I'm going either way, but as a planner for a living, I like to know what to expect a little :)

Just wanted 2 let you people know thanks for
the replies on where to go. We ended up staying
@ the buckhorn in wetmore right on trail 7 in
the woods. Riding was great with smoth & flat
trails throughout the whole forest area. Getting
into town for gas was rough until yesterday when
we received 3-4in of heavy wet snow which was
really a help. Saw 3 or 4 groomers still going
in that area.Seney, shingleton, GM, still grooming .
Rode for 3 days with 1 bad trail going north out
of Seney ... I think # 419 going north. Dirt &
mud 4 about 1 1/2 miles then back 2 good snow.
Had a wonderful time with my son. If looking for
a last ride this weekend the buckhorn is the place
to stay ... C u guys next year !!

A group of us are trying to decide on riding either from Seney or Calumet on Saturday. We are hoping to do some off-trail riding. Any recommendations anyone?

Southern Colorado? Seriously tho, anything off trail is still set-up and pretty hard, regardless of where you go in the U.P. East end anyways. You'll find plenty of snow, just nothing worth "carving".

off trail is still concrete... I bet trails are decent around here. I have not been out yet. From what I saw from road in car they look nice.

Dito on what snow crazy says. Off trail is soft in the sunshine parts. No way are you able to carve like normal powder riding .
In the shade every place is hard as a rock off trail and even on trail. If you just want to ride around in the woods, plenty
of hard packed snow east of Munising & all the way to the Soo
