heading up to wetmore the first week of feb. never been there before i am about a 50% trail rider 50% off trail. anything good there. is there any spots to get off the trail. anyone intrested in meeting up and eather taking me off trail or riding with us for a day or two there will be a group of 4

Great area to ride !!! Fair amount of traffic on weekends. Lots of areas to get off trail and play. Area trails are kept in pretty good shape depending on traffic. Munising has plenty places to eat, must try the Dog Patch. I've rode in and around the area since 1985, but due to other obligations have not been in the area for the last five years. That's about to change though !!!
Hope you enjoy your trip to the Wetmore area.

DogPatch is not a place to eat anymore. They have gone downhill big time. In Munising you still have Sydneys, The Navigator, and the Chinese resteraunt. Venture out to Christmas and you can either eat at the Casino or at Foggy's Steakhouse. Few other places to eat would be the Woodlands in Shigleton, Bear Trap which is on your way if you were going to take a ride to Miner's Castle. Also in the south direction from Shingleton would be Boot Lake Bar. All are excellent. There is also the Cherrywood which is located between Wetmore and Shingleton.

I second to stayaway from the Dogcrap, not what it used to be. Foggys in Christmas is great food. I also like the Bear trap and the Buckhorn.
Lots of places to stop if your into a little sight seeing. Miners castle and miners falls, lakenland scupture park, Big spring, the ice cave in Eben. All these places have trails leading to them.
Plenty of off trail in that area, Trails are normally are in good shape. The main trail 8 can get a little rough at times. 8 has been much better the past 2-3 years then in the years past.
If you ride into the main part of munising there is a curfew where you can ride in the city limits. I guess you can call it downtown part.

I have been going up there since 1982.
Try to make it every other weekend Jan thur March.
Leaving tomorrow for a few days up there.
A lot of nice motels to stay at and good places to eat. Our favorite is the Bear Trap.
Watch your gas gauge this year. Last I heard is no gas at Shingelton or Milstand.
Trails are always good in the am and getting rough later in the afternoon.
After a few trips up there, you'll get to know the short cuts to avoid the roughness.

speaking of Shingleton, do you know if the gas station has reopened? It was closed last year when we were up there.

The Shingleton store is closed with no hopes of opening in teh near future. Too much work needs to be done to the gas pumps and the store.

Also correct on Melstrand store, they are also closed. after having no gas last winter and getting a new tank, they closed for good this past August. There is Gas in Wetmore at the BP, in Christmas, at the newly opened hotel The White Pine Lodge, across from Foggy's and next to the Casino, and of course the stations in Munising are still open.

The Hillside Party store just outside of munising is closed as well, but should be reopening in mid to late March.

Your Wetmore Trip

Saw your post and lack of information from Others. There are great trails running all directions out of Wetmore, easy to do a 200 miler on trails. You have the Plains to east for Super off trail, and just a couple miles south of Wetmore there are Forest Roads. Get a local map, fill tank at BP and your off. (Note: Most people ride trail 8 as main east west route... explore side trails, and go to Lakenland.) Would show you around but we are at Kemosabe the last week of January with a group of 8. Mark

When you say up, do you mean the U.P. I don't want to get you're hopes up, but i may have a spot open on the trailor for that week. I won't know till monday night. ( jan. 11 ) We just trail ride. We stay in Rockland, Mich. in the U.P. I am from Ft. Atkinson. We don't drink and ride. Our group ranges from 53-46-22 in age, and will ride 200+ miles per day. I prefer you're sled be 03 or newer. Let me know what you think. Remember, just looking for alternate person at this time. Thank's Bob. Please post you're # here and i will call you.

Batman, Thanks for the offer, I'll take a pass as I have plans to be in Wetmore. I forgot to mention that I am a trail rider, unless someone can guide me off trail. Not a flat out driver and can have a cocktail or two after the sled is parked for the night.

Heckler, my wife and I, possibly my bro will be in wetmore at comfort inn. We are showing up wedensday january 20th. We don't mind an extra in the group. We ride on and off trail, also been riding that area for about 10 years so we know the area pretty well.

I know a great guy who guides locally here in Munising/Wetmore area and his rates are really, really cheap. Many of our guests use him and I've never heard a single complaint. He does both on and off-trail guiding as a hobby and is just awesome.

Also, many times our guests will take along another rider---stop by around 7am for breakfast and see if you can tag along with someone here!

Peter,

Thank you for the offer. It looks like I might be able to connect with another group during the week, at least at the beginning. We will see how the weather develops and pray for snow. I have to transfer motels mid-week and will be at the Comfort Inn (Thursday-Friday) also.
