What does a snow roller do?

I see a local club has one at their equipment shed. Does it attach to the back of the drag?

Attaches to groomer, not the drag. It is typically used to compact the snow before grooming. Many times in early season to help setup the base.

Also, I know some clubs tried to use them after this last big storm before attempting to get through the trails with the drag,

You probably saw our new roller (LMT) in Wabeno. WE tested the roller after the groomer show and were so impressed purchased it. It packs 6" or more fresh snow much better the pulling a drag and just panning. This last big storm on the WRT it was the only way we could plow and pack the 4 foot plus drifts. WE had our second groomer with a drag follow to finish the trail worked awesome. Also in heavy snow two groomers together can help each other when one is stuck (worked 4 times) With 60 inches of snow last month stuck groomers are a major problem.
