What GPS for Go-Kart?

I am a Metals fab teacher in Central MN, my students are building a supermilage vehicle, which is just a really light weight super aerodynamic go kart. The students will compete at BIR may 17 and 18th. They drive around a 3 mile track and try to get the best gas mileage they can. They are looking to use a GPS to track speed, distance and time.

Any suggestions on what gps would be the best. Preferably one with long battery life, a big screen, route tracking and maybe some cool functions we could use to calculate efficiency :).

Thanks,
Tomk

I like the bike computer idea, but if are looking for a gps just about any will work the Garmin nuvi series would be nice, obviously you don't need it for maps. But when you at the map screen, like your driving down the road, you can hit the speed area of the screen and change the display to a large speedometer. It give a lot of data, Speed, Time, time stopped, time moving, top speed hit trip distance and over all distance. You would most likely need to set the gps to a walking mode or off-road mode just so its not confused, with you driving in circles near other roads. I might think your on a street because of location to adjacent road which might mess up top speed mileage. etc.

I've seen some online as refurbished for around $50-$70.
I have the Garmin Nuvi 255W and it handles everything I need and more. Everything else is just bell and whistles.

Post some Pictures when complete or maybe through the build. Sounds like a fun class to be in.

I work for a metal fabrication shop here in town and I have to say more schools should have
a metal fab class.there just doesn't seem to be many young guys interested in it anymore.
