What is this Thing?

I came across this on another site and thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone can identify it or it's purpose. Usually I'm pretty good at recognizing most mechanical machines but this one has me stumped. Other than the fact that it's an OSHA Nightmare with all the exposed Drive Belts, Chains, and Wooden Ladders I have no idea what they're doing in this picture. Saw Mill, Combine, Shell Picker at the Nut Factory? So, put on your thinking caps and give us your best guess or definitive answer. I'm quite confident the JD Family can come up with an answer.

What would happen if I opened it and then held my finger on it and choose the box that popped up that says search Google for this image? Lol....I am gonna guess a steam powered rock crusher

A steam powered? A "Cat" tractor with a internal combustion engine? Don't think so. Maybe recovering, or cleaning stamp sand?

Older Steam powered rock crusher setup resurrected and powered by a cat....better.... U of all people should know this since you rode these things to prom back in the day.....lol

Good idea! Let us know what he has to say.

At times like this I miss my own father. He would know instantly what this is OR he would sit for hours going over every belt and pulley until he could tell you what is happening.

Mixing Concrete before the days of RediMix? I think the key is the horizontal cylinder atop the hopper. Everything else is gravity, I think the answer has something to do with that cylinder or tank.

Looks like a recirculating crushing/screening plant to me. The main funnel shape is a storage hopper, they roll a wagon underneath the "funnel" and load the wagon with the finished product. Guys behind the plant are loading bulk material to be sorted and crushed. Conveyor on back lifts the bulk material and dumps it inside of the cylinder on top. Cylinder on top rotates, and has small holes on outside. Small enough product falls through the holes in the cylinder into the storage hopper as finished product. Too large of product exits the end of the cylinder and falls down the chute into the crusher, in the center of the picture. Material gets crushed finer, and falls out the bottom of the crusher. Bucket elevator scoops up crushed product from underneath, and carries it back up and puts it back through the cylinder (screen), product that's still too big exits the end of the screen and goes through crusher again.

I was an injuneer for 7 years at a company that built crushing/screening equipment. Yesterday I couldn't spell injuneer, now I are one!
