How much PLAY should there be in a properly adjusted trailer wheel bearing? Up ,down and/or side to side. THANKS for any info.

Shouldn't be much, if any. If you can visibly notice movement or feel it for that matter, it'd be worth a look/repack. They could just be loose too.

When doing mine after repacking, I snug the outer nut up good with a wrench while turning the hub (just enough so it feels tight and not over done). Then without letting the hub move at all, back off on the nut with the wrench a turn, then go back and tighten up the nut using your FINGERS only. If you tighten the nut up with your fingers, it will put the right amount of pre-load on the bearings without fearing of being too tight. Put the cotter key in the hole and you're good. If the hole in the spindle won't line up with the castly nut, then loosen the nut slightly to line it up.

Agreed, None or ( not much ) would be best . I like vogelm1's assembly method, sounds about right to me. Hope this is helpful. Axle Bearings will sometimes " howl " as they go bad while driving. even a good bearing will sound noisey a little when adjusted correctly and greased then jacked up and the wheel spun by hand. I think the cheap bearings & races I buy from my local powersports store are no name junk. They have seemed to radiate vibration thru the axle when NEW, just has always bothered me. There might be some high end trailer bearings out there somewhere but they would be sealed & pricy ... IF so. ( IMO ) ( Ho Ho Ho ) ( We need snow ).........
