When will Wisconsin trails open

I live in Grant county but also snowmobile around the Madison and Janesville area. How do I find out for sure if the trails are open and what happens to you if you cannot find out and go and they are not open?

The trails can be LOST/CLOSED. The land owner will not allow use of the land for the trail anymore. Lets see, a hunter can get pissed and shoot at you. I have heard of stories of hunters getting pissed and firing a few shots in a sledders direction. The no fun cops can give you nice large tickets.

Here is a way that you can find out http://www.travelwisconsin.com/snow_report.aspx
They can be a few hours off. But the best bet is to find the numbers to local clubs and call them up.

Here is a club in Grant County The first page tells you if the trails are open or not http://rrhuehn.fatcow.com/index.html
or call this number for trail conditions (608) 723-2125

Dane county (Madison) Phone for maps and trail conditions
After hours: (608) 242-4576
Days: (608) 246-3896

Rock County (Janesville) Snowmobile Hotline message 24/7
(608) 757-5458

Final note, go to this link http://www.awsc.org/Dynamic_Menu/Snowmobile_Clubs.aspx click on the county you want to ride. If you look on the right hand side you will see a number to call for the county you clicked.

Trails in Racine

I just called our trail line and we are closed due to crops still standing in the fields. I feel for the farmers with this storm.

Racine County Trail line is (262) 554-0133

Road Riding

I have heard that it is legal to ride a sled on the road if it is a snow emergency. Any truth to that?

No body wants to be preached at...but the best way is to know is to "join your local club"..help out with the trails..sell some raffle tickets..your club will call you when the trails are open. the trails in northern wisconsin will open , weather permitting after the 15th..antlerless deer season.

Dane County sounds like it will open tomorrow. But please check the Dane County Parks Website or call the hotline before riding. Also, Dane Co being open does not mean that any of the neighboring counties will also be open. The web site and trail line are the best way to check on whether or not Dane Co. is open. The hotline # is(608) 242-4576. The website is:

http://www.countyofdane.com/lwrd/parks/default.aspx

This link explains the situation - it is a press release (released today) from the Dane County Parks Commission and The Dane County Counsel of Snowmobile Clubs:

http://www.countyofdane.com/press/details.aspx?id=1964

The same discussion happened on the blogs last year and oddly enough Dane Co. opened on 12/09/2008.

Sorry, by the times listed on the thread, I thought it was possibly out of date info. That is until I saw the time on my post....
