Where are the clippers?

John,

The last few times we had these cold snaps in the past month or two when we did we had these clipper snows that would give us an inch or two every couple of days. I was wondering what makes this cold snap different to where we are not getting the same clipper systems coming through giving us a little bit a fresh snow every couple days?

Thanks for your time as always.

The difference is right now there is a huge upper air ridge of high pressure in western North America. That blocks any of the storms that would normally roll in off the Pacific and become a potential clipper or Colorado low. We had a similar setup occur this winter back at the end of January.

Right now there is actually a strong Pacific storm indicated to undercut the ridge and bring some heavy precip to CA by the end of the week and then is indicated to go on to be the snow producer for the central Midwest later Sunday into Monday.
