Where is Everybody?

My friend and I rode close to 400 miles on Friday and Saturday all over Iron County, Wisconsin and some of Ashland County. We passed a total of about 30 sleds on the trails. Does anybody ride these things? There were, of course, plenty of people at all the bars, and lots of sleds staying at the motel, but not too many people out on the trails. There was plenty of snow to ride--my carbides are fine.

Tons of trailers heading up north today. Maybe those people are riders.

No kidding I’d be happy we have basically stopped riding on weekends cause it’s gotten so bad. We will trailer to the 40 in newberry and hang there sat n sun unless we don’t see much traffic then we will hit trails. I understand most people can only ride weekends but man does it bring ALOT of bad apples out.

I am staying in Ishpeming at the Magnuson and there has not been more than 5 cars in the lot all weekend. Traffic on the trail has been slim to none all weekend. Not that I am complaining. I went from Ishpeming to Big Bay to Marquette and back and did not see more than 10 sleds all day. You cant get better than that.

Enjoy that!! The exact reason I don’t go to the UP.

Closing in on a thousand miles so far and haven’t seen 100 total sleds.

I suppose a lot has to do with the temp - get near or below zero and everyone gets Skart!

The weekend after New Years has always been a light weekend. Most people stay home this weekend and then go up MLK weekend. I spent the week riding after xmas and I know I definitely needed a weekend off.

I think it was too cold.
Sled/drink teams always have 2 options.

Unfortunately, there are mostly taverns on the trail to stop and take a break to warm up, use the bathroom, grab a bite to eat....etc.... While we can assume that sledders are boozing up at taverns it is again mostly taverns that make up stops along the way and folks that don't drink stop there too. While I agree that there are impaired riders on the trails, don't forget that there are impaired drivers of all sorts of influence (ie; drugs, prescription drugs, cell phones, GPS, alcohol, sleep deprived, etc) surrounding us in our cars everyday. Not sure we'll ever be "safe" driving, walking, biking, cycling, etc....when we're in reach of motorized roadways, trails etc....

IMO, it's just the way society is and the best we can do is to be alert and drive defensively if we venture out. Can't live behind brick walls or a bubble all our life?!

Think Snow and be safe folks!

Exactly and traditional in northern WI after NY peeps go home get back to work after the holidays then swarm the area 2nd weekend of Jan thru the season. We get the JD storm and they will come in force! Also ER Derby will populate Vilas if you hit it with low traffic count your blessings won't last long with good conditions.

You’re hurting my feelings. Did I tell you that I was at the Cup clinching game in 2015? Also game 3 against the Penguins in 1992? Also the All Star game with the flag waving Desert Storm anthem?

Anyway, ride ‘em while you can.
