Where to ride Northern WI or MN??

Looking to do a trip with my wife around Feb. 19th. Ideal would be no longer than a 4hr drive from the Minneapolis Metro area. I've rode around the Cable area many times - great area, but wouldn't mind trying something new. We did ride some trails North of Duluth a few years back, it was o.k., but kind of boring.

Any suggestions of areas in Northern WI or MN? We'd like something with accessible lodging and decent areas to eat.

Try Mercer/Turtle Flambeau/Springstead/Manitowish Waters/Boulder Junction. I have a cabin on Namekagon, but have gone east and enjoyed the riding. I cannot confirm snow quality over there right now, but I like the riding. And I can confirm being confused as **** around Minoqua. Stay north of there and trails are better signed etc.... Just my $.02.

ditto on Boulder Junction/Presque Isle/ Manitowish ...... all reports good in that area........southern Vilas fair at best.....

Another place that I thought was great riding was from Lake Vermillion up through Voyageurs Park to International Falls. It kind of depends on what you are looking for in the ride. When you get into Voyageurs, there is a strict speed limit on lakes, 45 mph I think, and 25 mph on island portages. There are always DNR/cops there with radar, so you have to be careful for that. But it is a beautiful area and lots of trails to ride. It also typically doesn't get as crazy with sleds as some of the more popular northern Wisconsin areas or the UP. We also will ride across Vermillion and head to Ely and find a different trail back. Again a great area to ride. There are enough places to eat and stay at in that area. Also have been told that riding west of Cook is good, but haven't done it myself.

I haven't been up there yet this year and don't know how the snow conditions are now. It has become one of my favorite places to ride now.

Price County (Park Falls Phillips area) has great trails and usually not crowded at all. Lots of stops, etc. but check conditions first. Not sure how much snow they have this year.

we ride out of the finland/ silver bay area quite a bit & really enjoy the trails in that area. if the State trail is groomed it is hard to beat for twistys & scenery. the trails right around Finland can be very fun also. Great food in silver bay & a pretty nice Americinn. you need to get 3-4 miles inland for good snow

I've done Crane Lake a couple of times, really like the area. Don't like the 6hr. drive....

Anyone know if a person can get out on Apostle Islands or Madeline Island - or isn't the ice good enough this year?

No for the Apostle Islands. The Ice Road will likely be available to Madeline Island soon so it may be accessible by sled. There is no groomed trail system on Madeline.

The rest of the islands are a part of Apostle Island National Lakeshore and can not ride within 1/2 mile (or is it1/4 mile?) of any of the islands nor mainland in the Apostle Island area.

There is a risk in riding the big lake, especially for a year like we are having and do not advise it even under normal ice conditions.

Cable to northern Bayfield Peninsula is in the 70-80 mile range one way but a lot of different route options (trail vs fire roads etc.).
