Are lakes freezing up up north? What about the swamps? It seems like it's been pretty cold overnight. Just wondering. There hasn't been snow but maybe the ground is freezing?

There has been a lot of snow and more white than not in Nov got to 6 inch accumulation then melted. Prolly 2 inches now.... every cold front brings us some LES this time of year and squalls are fun to watch. 200 Acre lakes have been solid for a couple of weeks now and ice fishermen are out on the ice. ER chain has some ice but I'm not sure how extensive and would proceed with caution. So far we are tracking like a traditional winter ice fishing by Thanksgiving and snowmobiling by Xmas. Deer hunting has been very good lots of background white but not too deep to hike. So far so good and I have been looking for that dumper system snow to help jump start the season and have the clubs start panning and filling in holes. We are in very good shape now so bring on more cold and snow we have a watch pot storm for Wednesday rain or snow line very close to Vilas.

My lake has started to ice up the last few days. I'm on one of the deeper lakes on the chain, but the shallow lakes look like they are iced up already.

South-central Vilas, about 5 miles northwest of Eagle River, my lake has an ice layer, who knows how thick.
Shoreline marshy areas can't be walked on without breaking through - noted while deer hunting. I won't be going out there for several weeks.

You will like this Bob...I was in Phelps this morning and North Twin froze up last night had about 1" as far as I could see west of town. The kicker is 35mph winds forecast tonight.

west bay of little St Germain was crusted over a week ago Monday then the wind and sun opened it back up. Crusted over again Sunday night. No ice fishing with turkey dinner.

Yeah I would not walk out on any ice in Vilas this week just to warm during the day. Some of the larger lakes are setting up at night in lower 20s but can't be solid. We are very close right now just need a sustained cold snap and ice will thicken quickly on all lakes.
