WI DNR responsible for decrease in deer

Since I have moved to southern Wi (Lake geneva Area) I have met a few people who claim that DNR are bowing down to insurance companies to reduce the amount deer. The reason being that less deer = less deer vs auto accident claims. They also claim that the whole CWD is a hoax as well. I have been going to the Boulder Jct area for about 30 years and I just do not see the same amount of deer as I did in the past. I have coming to southern Wi where I now live for 12 years and also do not see as many as well. So what do you think? Is there truth to the rumor? Is it wolves or just nature? I just would like to see some more deer and I have not have talked to anyone who says that the population is not going way down. Think snow - LD

I saw your user name and thought what a small world. I agree deer numbers are down from shooting too many does. I also think that as a whole we are not as agressive a hunters as we used to be due to the average hunter's ages increasing which means less people are moving them around. Other contributing factors include more private and posted land, more less people per acre density of hunters due to posted land and stand hunters, and baiting and shining making deer go nocturnal.

Too many Wolf in the midwest ! need a bounty on them like old days Wi. bear population at all time high, they kill a lot more fawns than people think. put that with the fact that deer up here in northern wi. get hunted from 1st of sept thru dec by natives, youth, archers, gunhunters, muzzle loaders, handicaps ,roadkills, poachers, etc! deer don't live long in wisonsin!!

Deer numbers way down up north & DNR wants it that way. For every deer I count DNR counts 10 X. Now DNR says I guess we did over kill the past few years. See no deer there are no deer easy as that.

Actually, I think they just swam across the river into Iowa....More deer than ever, over here. Iowa DNR has run the doe reduction program for a couple years here now and I've seen more deer this fall and last fall than in the last five years. Have a neighbor that is an autobody guy and I think his main business is deer damage vehicles. I know that my own vehicles average 1 deer collision every two years. sometimes, twice a year.

The deer numbers were down in Wisconsin going by the total harvest in 2009 from past years and the DNR does have deer number goals, etc. but to really think insurance companies somehow make the DNR change the rules I think is simply people coming up with theories. Do insurance companies pay them?? The DNR never seems to have enought money, etc. Doesn't really make sense.

Also, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the WI deer heard is very real. The proof is overwhelming. Many tests have confirmed it's existence although luckly CWD is confined to only a small portion of the state.

Regarding the WI DNR's ability to acurately estimate the deer numbers, that does leave something to be desired. They took a LOT of heat from hunters regarding this last year and are trying to do better at this and not being so arrogant about their estimated deer numbers. I don't think there are any consipiricies going on the the WI DNR although they did grossly overestimate the deer popluation going in to the 2009 season. I also think they underestimate the bear and wolf population which is a factor in the lower deer numbers also.

I agree with what has been said above as contributing factors. One last thing to add would be we have had 3 winters in a row that have enough serverity to cause winterkill. That has to be taken into account as well.

Over here in NW MN the wolves and coyotes are getting the deer. I doubt the DNR and insurance companies could ever get together at any level to do anything like control deer herds. It is much simpler. Mother Nature is just doing her thing.
