Winch wiring

Can anyone tell me how to wire the winch so it works while in gear. I use this for a plow and it gets to be a pain to take it in/out of gear to raise and lower the plow.
This is on a 07 Yamaha Grizzly if it makes a difference

I have an 04 yam with a winch and have not had any problems, did you put the winch in on your own or is it factory? I did my own and all I had to do was to wire the relay direct to the battery, the wires from the switch to the relay and then the big leads from the relay to the winch, don't even need the key on to run the winch and have not had any problems with it in 6 years. If it is factory try to locate the relay for the winch, I am only guessing but there should be an override on it to detect when the ATV is in gear. If you can try to take off the leads and use a meter to test them to see if they are hot, it should be a simple set up as it either needs to be on or off for the plow to work. Put the meter on the leads and then put the machine in and out of gear if it is open when out of gear then just cover the ends and leave them off, if it is closed in gear then make a jumper on the relay to keep it closed and the plow will not know if you are in or out of gear.

You have some winch wiring going through your shift wiring. I'm guessing that the power lead to your switch is wired through the shift switch. I'm not fimiliar with Yam's but I'll try to put a wiring schematic up that is generic and helpful.

seems to me that all you would have to do is find the power wire that feeds the switch or relay and then connect that to a power source that is "hot" all the time, not just when the machine is in neutral, should be easy to trace wire back from switch or relay. i have a grizzly also, mine is tapped in off of the "hot" wire that feeds the accessory socket, it powers up whenever the key is in the "on" position. it does have a relay that is near the battery, if you can't find it-you might be able to feel it clicking when you shift it in and out of gear or possibley hear it if you shift it without the engine running, but with the key on. was this a dealer installed winch? should be easy enough to switch!!

Just finished with the re-wire. I found the lead that powers the switch and re-routed it to the accessory like was mentioned (Thanks Wilson!). Everything works great. Also did some cleaning while all of the covers were off!
