Winter Outlook???

Just saw this online. I like this prediction if only for entertainment and not based on science.

"Hold onto your wool caps: we may be in for a brutal winter.

Unlike other news stories predicting a warm, wet winter, the Farmers' Almanac predicts a "colder-than-normal" season, stretching from the Continental Divide to the Appalachians.

“Contrary to the stories storming the web, our time-tested, long-range formula is pointing toward a very long, cold, and snow-filled winter," said editor Peter Geiger in a statement on the company's website.

The popular forecaster said frigid conditions are expected in mid-February across the New England, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and the Midwest.

Above-normal snowfall is predicted for the Great Lakes, Midwest, New England and Pacific Northwest, they said.

Stormy conditions are expected to hang around through the official start of spring."

All that modern meteorology and it's technology has resulted in is being able to point to 4 or 5 storm models that can then be hyped to a much larger audience.

Here's my winter forecast:

Its going to get cold at some point, somewhere, and it will snow there.

I'll be there when the snow falls with my snowmobile.

What is the history of long warm summers being followed by cold snowy winters? Seems like things do balance out a bit over the year. Maybe I'm just guessing.

I’m hearing the dreaded El Niño is forming. We should know by mid October when John takes a stab for his long range winter forecast. No matter what it will snow but the follow up temps makes or breaks trail conditions. Just have to see but me and buds already started sled and trailer prep.

The weather stats from year to year are a unique set and get used to create the average that then gets spun as "normal"

NOAA says that current ENSO conditions are neutral, with a 70% chance of El Nino by winter. Keep in mind that a weak El Nino has less effect on our weather than a strong El Nino. And keep in mind that we are approaching the lowest point in the solar cycle, which increases the chance of a harsh winter (which is probably the primary reason for the Farmer's Almanac prediction).

Maybe John could throw in his opinion?

Winter???

My prediction is that there are equal chances of below normal, normal, and above normal temperatures and snowfall that will occur during different periods this winter. Not very helpful, but I bet I will be right!

Here is my prediction for this winter. If it is warm, Grant Hoar will be hunting Bambi and his sled won't be ready for the season. If it is cold, Grant Hoar will be hunting Bambi and his sled still won't be ready for the season. (Sorry, I had to! :) )

Exactly! And this is the main tool thats used to drive the fear into global warming alarmists. There is no such thing as "normal" weather.

Not to get too political but the same ilk that wants to control the climate with tax dollars is currently on full parade display at the BK nomination hearings.
Scary, scary stuff, folks....the end will justify their means.
