John,
What were (if any) the specific weather patterns that brought us the epic winters of 1977-79? Were they El Nino years, La Nina years, etc? Was there a huge Omega block over Greenland? I'm out of my league in technical terms, but I see that term bantered about quite a bit.

Thanks, and I'm eagerly anticipating your seasonal outlook.

Hi Regionrat.

The winters of 77-79 were doozies for many areas of the Midwest. While there was no specific setup that brought all the cold and snow, the north central US was predominated by an upper air trough. For the most part the ENSO was considered neutral.

I guess it was really just the type of winters where we progressed from one cold and snowy setup to another.
