Has anybody had any good or bad experiences. What are the brand names you'd suggest and where have you purchased them from? I love the concept because we have a cabin and it would be nice to just move it when we take the dogs. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Electric dog fence

I have the electric fence(buried in the ground)Best thing i ever did to keep the dog in the yard started when she was a pup now she doesnt even think about it.when we built our cabin she and my other at the time ran off so what i did was buried new wire in the ground bought it at tractor supply about 3" deep (soft sand)and then laid the rest in the woods the power box is what costs so i just put a pig tail on the power box and moved it back and forth from the cabin to down state she is so used to the beep on the collar she knows now where her line is.we have pet stop i think there is one called contain a pet.the portable one work on a radius dosent give them a lot of room but i know people that have them hope this helps.

I have the wireless unit and like it. I can take it with me anywhere we go and just plug it in. The biggest problem, like said above, is it's a radius. With a rectangle lot, you have to compromise with side distance and front-back distance. Even without collar, he goes to where it would go off and stops. But, he does know if he has the collar on or not, so he will push it if he is not wearing the collar. Kinda funny!!

I like it.

I'll have to look at the name when I get home. I bought it at Pet Stuff, I believe. I will verify with the boss when I get home.

About a month ago I had the same decision to make... build a fence/wireless collar/training collar. The building a fence idea was tossed because of our lack of time right now before winter. I liked the wireless collar (Pet Safe brand) but we have 5 acres and I wanted the dogs to be WITH me when I was out and about in the barns and the 90' radius wasn't going to cut it. I ended up getting a training collar (Innotech brand). It was a little frustrating the first 1.5 training sessions or so but after that it was amazing how fast she learn to listen to me and stay by my side. No more chasing the cattle!

P.S. bought my collar at Farm & Fleet but keep an eye out on ebay too, there are some good deals.

I have the Pet Stop America brand. Its been in use for five years without a problem. I have two dogs on it. My dealer gave me a great cash price, trained the dogs and its a digital system which means any dog with a digital Pet Stop America digital collar will be read by the system and will be beeped and shocked. One of the best things I have ever bought! My dealer ran the wire through a black garden hose in the mulched areas for extra protection on the wire. This system has been flawless!

We have the petsafe brand wireless unit it works great it took our dog about 1hr to figure out his new boundries, it would be nice to have a little more area for the dog to go but you can use multiple units if you want more area.

I have a petsafe one that I got at Sams Club 13 years ago, but they have them at Farm and Fleet. Also I have collars I got at Home Depot, those vibrates and beeps, then will shock, the vibrate works better than any shock. one word of advice is do not skimp or rush the training, that is the key, once the dog is trained RIGHT it won't even need a collar, 13 years never had the dogs run. another thing is make sure you get their surge protector and ground it properly, I've done other ones only to get them zapped by lightning strikes. Also helps to have visual markings like tree lines or hills, gardens or drive ways, I took a cheap mason saw and divided my driveway so the dogs could not go on the side of the house with the utility meters, Overall system best money ever spent.

Our neighborhood doesn't allow fenses. We put in the Invisable Fence we had a Great Pyranees at the time.

It didn't work for this breed of dog. First problem is this is a dog born to roam and protect sheep from wolf's etc.. The hair around her neck was so thick the buzz didn't phase her. We even tried shaving by her neck.

The last straw was she was getting mean and nasty so we gave up. Now we have Newfoundlands but the system is so old the wires have been cut and haven't used it.
Many homes have this in our area and seem to work well.

cyguy - Sorry it took so long. Mine is a Pet Safe brand too. It's really nice for taking camping or up to the cabin.

Good luck.

INVISIBLE FENCE is my choice by far. Have one in both locations, and my little pup doesn't even wear her collar anymore. She stops where she knows the "border" is, and waits for me to carry her over to safe zone, where we go for walks, etc. She may be a real smart dog (I was told that she was by the Invisible Fence installation and training tech. I had....but I'll bet they say that to all their customers) but it sure has worked flawlessly. And it's humane, which was a real big deal to me. Pricey, but you usually get what you pay for.
